Its interesting how these videos make it seem so tame and easy, but when you actually drive it at speed, it is a lot more challenging. Most of the video he seems to be going so slowly, but hes averaging 60+ mph.

And keep in mind that it's almost all uphill at a fairly decent rate of incline.

Those machines are just awesome, and have terrific nimbleness and a lot of weight to throw around and yet maintain controllable grip (even if loose grip/drifting in dirt - it's enough grip to make controlled slides and high-speed turns, though obviously not perfect grip.. it's kind of a science of drift lol).

I want a WRX, as I feel I need exactly those characteristics in my next vehicle. It just might be a little while, I am trying to make my Dakota survive for awhile longer... it has enough work in it to almost be considered new (save for the actual engine block and the associated parts), so I demand it last a little longer. That, and I just cannot afford a vehicle purchase at this point in time. Hopefully in a year I can have the income to afford a loan payment, apartment, and car loan. At the moment, definitely not.

Tame and easy?
Holy fuck!! That looked dizzyingly fast to me.
I don't care how good their equipment is, these guys are flirting with instant death.

Nice video.

It's a masterful science of applying high speeds while balancing on the line of control.
:D

It's easily the most dangerous racing sport, one where only the best drivers of all racing can actually compete. These guys don't go nearly as fast as most other racing disciplines, but then again, these guys are going the maximum speed possible along the roads they race, all while they maintain an incomplete picture of the actual course in the form of course notes and then applying actual race speed for the first time in the actual timed stage event.

And that's why I love the sport so damn much, and can barely watch any other form of racing (GT/GP leagues are the only other form of racing I can tolerate).

This dude seriously has a death wish. It's only a matter of time.

Him and every other pro rally driver, I guess :D

Great vid - driving through a cloud is funny when you were hundreds of feet down below only minutes prior.

Yeah, that course isn't all that different from a whole slew of common rally destinations. These drivers appear to flirt with death quite regularly, but they are also extremely skilled, and it would take a bad mistake - and the odds show that most of these instances that is not fatal... that's not all that different than other racing disciplines, mistakes prove fatal when driving at speed. The way the death happens just ends up being a little, different, compared to driving into a barricade.

Yeah that's what I meant, not just rally car racing, it seems ANYTHING this guy does is death defying.

I remember watching nitro circus on fueltv few years back and cringing at some of the stuff those guys did on a regular basis. A few of them got seriously injured too. Crazy shit.

Hah, never knew he was that hardcore

There's definitely not a shortage of crazy crap this guy does but my favorite Pastrana clip was on Nitro Circus. One of the cast members, in full gear tries to hydroplane across a pool with a dirtbike and fails on a number of attempts, and then Pastrana in board shorts and nothing else leisurely grabs the bike and nails it. It was the first try on the show but I'm not sure they edited out the other attempts. Still, pretty insane.

He's not really that good. I beat him all the time when I race him, and he's always telling me how good I am.

Yeah and man, I love hearing how awesome I am from Ken Block. And that man is like a child-god playing with machines - he's a god and all, but has the heart for danger than only the young gods tend to possess.

On my quest to see a video of that, I landed on this:

youtube - slip and bleed
Slip and bleed: that is apparently a crazy slip-and-slide down a hill full of twists and bumps... and no real perfectly safe way to come to a halt at the bottom, leading to some awesome footage. Some people do look like they find a way down in a way that results in an "omg they nailed it" style of disbelief.

Then, I found this:
Travis Pastrana Hydro-Jump
Hydroplaning onto a lake and taking a jump that's on the lake.

Hehe, helps when I can press "R" to reset my car on the track after I fly off it at 75 mph...

IRL I'm dead. :D

Found it. http://www.nitrocircus.com/nitro-circus-on-mtv/0-Panamania___Season_1___Episode_9-65.html

6:16 into the video.

It's not one of the greatest stunts they've done, but that first guy eats it HARD, and travis just throws on a helmet and gives it a go.. I mean, why not? It's hilarious how much faster he was going then the other guy.
