Sadly, I think too few that read these forums will ever recognize the subtle brilliance contained within these posts.
 
Trash is what I put in the garbage.

So the garbage is the container that holds the trash. Such as the lid, bag, etc.

Not the same thing.
 
Garbage is what you put down the garbage disposer.

Trash is what you put in the trash can, and take to the curb.
 
I use garbage for anything specifically that's lousy or useless (IE: this <whatever> is garbage) and trash for anything that needs to be thrown away.
