well i was taking out the trash this morning when suddenly it hit me: what is the difference between trash and garbage? I mean, is there a difference at all?

Assuming there isn't, which do you prefer?

I prefer to say trash as it rolls off the tongue much easier IMO.

Simple, garbage you compost, trash you burn, everything else recycle!

I use mainly trash but also garbage. I use rubbish only figuratively (e.g. that's rubbish).
Refuse: I've never seen anyone use it, I never used it.
