transmission problems

Lifer
so yesterday i noticed my 98 preludes transmission was acting a little funny. i just took her for a drive up and down the street and when i put the car in drive it clearly jumps into gear pretty hard and the same goes for reverse. the transmission does not want to change into a higher gear and ends up doing so late and there has been some slippage when driving the car goes to change gear and ends up in no gear and just revs in neutral.

one of the main reasons i bought a honda was so i would not have to deal with this crap. i have just under 90k miles. is there any chance this can be fixed without having to replace the transmission?

***update***

so i had my car towed to my mechanic this morning and i just got the dreaded call back. my transmission is shot and it it going to cost around $2800 to replace with a used low mileage transmission with a 6 month warranty. my mechanic is also going to add a new tranny cooler. cars can be such a drain on the wallet.

one other thing. i had a couple of coolant hoses replaced about a month ago and i was thinking that may be related. if the trans was not receiving enough coolant maybe?

Edit2: Check the fluid level? What color is it?

Edit3: dangit, ment to hit edit not reply... 😱

Check the fluid level! Sounds like it might be low. Some ATs have to be idling in neutral to check the fluid correctly, check your owners manual for the correct procedure. Have you noticed any red fluid underneath your car?

i just checked the fluid level and it is fine but the color seems to be off. it isnt a clear red but more of a dirty color.

Might need to have the fluid and filter changed then. Has it ever been changed that you know of?

i am pretty sure that my mechanic did a complete fluid change several months ago but i will need to check my records to make sure.

another thing is that i have had no trans problems at all and this just occured within the past 24 hours.

before even coming into this thread i know transmission problems would be related to a honda 😀 go me.

change the fluid and filter, do a transmission flush as well,

however, keep the fluid and run a magnet through it to try and see if there are any shavings that are picked up as the magnet goes through the oil. if there are, something else is wrong other than just the fluid.

I'm sorry, but people like you piss me off.

You're the first to blame the manufacturer when something goes wrong.

...Doesen't mean "It will magically last forever with no maintenance!"

go to www.superhonda.com and ask. Honda's and acuras around that time did have some problems with the trans.

no, a LOT of hondas have transmission problems, its just they are hondas.

You mean a lot of Hondas have automatic transmission problems. The manuals are some of the best in the business. I wish they would have designed the trans in my Subaru😛

Sorry, I didn't mean to come across like a jackass.

It just seemed to me that if your ATF is off color and burned, it hadn't been changed in a while. If that's not the case, then I appologize.

But my point still stands. People who do that DO piss me off. 😛

is it worth it to replace? whats a 98 prelude go for?

kbb is around $11,000 so imo it is worth it. i dont really have a choice.

5th gen SportShit is notorius for needing to be replaced soon. Go to any Prelude forum and you will see too many horror stories. Mine's approaching 80k too and know that it will need to be replaced soon. I have that certified warranty till June 06 on powertrain so I'm gonna try to get it done under warranty even if its not shot. Don't know how though.

i am just now finding that out. i friend at work has a 99 accord and is having the same problems. my mechanic just called me back and said he can get a new tranny from the dealer for about $300-$400 more then the used and it has a year warranty. so it looks like i will be shelling out about $3200....son of a biznatch.

Btw look into having it converted to manual. If you need links to forums let me know. A lot of ppl did it and I think it will be worth it. If you get auto tranny you will again be under the fear of it breaking.
