I'm going to build myself a new system soon and I was wondering if I could simply transfer my old harddrive to this new system. This is NOT going to be the hd containing the OS!

Will I be able to access and read all data correctly or can I expect there to be any problems?

thanx for any help on this

you most certainly CAN transfer your hard drive over. and if it's not the hard drive with the OS, you literally don't have ANYTHING to worry 'bout. so do it and have fun!

thanks! That's what I thought

I guess I just needed somebody to confirm it for me before actually going ahead and doing it

BUT,

Depending on where you put it in the new system, you may need to change a jumper on it! Unless it's SCSI:)

If it's going to be a master drive, make sure the jumper on the back is set as such...if it'll be a slave to another device, jumper it accordingly:)

It really depends on the operating system involved. It depends on the file format of that drive. If your boot drive is FAT vs. FAT32 you may not be able to read the FAT32 drive. Other way around should not be a problem. You may have a similar problem if your legacy drive was NTFS. That would be unusual as well as rare though.

I have always had mediocre experience when placing an old drive into a new system with a new drive. But my old drives have always had an OS on them.

You might encounter problems with drive letters, etc..
You might consider a software that will correct the file extensions, etc.. You can just give it a shot..... and handle any file location problems as they show up.

It might be an easier transformation if you had your last drive only with a single partition.
Like just a drive "c". Then it will become the drive "d" (providing you use a single partition on the new drive).

Fortunately you do not have an OS on the old drive.

Let us know how it goes.
