Charge from USB or the included power adapter

Ah. Cool. I was misreading a few of the reviews. It must work like my Mini does. The firewire cord on my mini plugs into the wall charger for AC power. This must be similar but only uses the USB cable.

I heard that there were issues with the headphone jack.... is this still a problem? If not, then i will buy one once i get paid.

does the carbon have ogg or flac support? *doesnt know*

i think apple lossless is a plus, but battery life and a crappy dac(what good is loss less when it sounds 'bad' no matter what?) get a

Hopefully Rio has better luck with this than the Karma; I've heard more horror stories than necessary about the HD going south in those.😱

Teenagers. TBH, I don't even like the way iPods look (at all), but of course that's just a subjective opinion. And if I did it certainly wouldn't figure into the decision-making process were I to buy one, though I personally won't till I can get one with an AM tuner)

I haven't heard of it being looked at / fixed, so would have to assume it is still a problem. Basically the jack's connection to the pcb is so weak due to keeping production cheap that it tends to break within a month or two, causing crackling (intermittently connected) or complete loss of sound (loss of connection). But the cheap production costs are transferred to the customer by its inexpensive priceta... er, wait a minute... 😕

yes it does, rio seems to have emerged as industry leader in DAP market as far as technological side is concerened. they are supposed to come out with vaja leather cases - much better looking than those fruity ipods.

i'm sure thats what all the companies were saying before they got knocked on their asses when the ipod came out and dominated the marked.😛

the site only has it down for
"Plays MP3, WMA, and Audible audio formats"

so no ogg or flac 🙁 the iriver fills that spot but doesnt seem to have a good UI. im waiting to see what the opensource firmware hack can do

is it just me or does it seems theres really no one true godly DAP?

personally i'm not sure why u'd want flac on a portable. can you hear the difference between flac and high bitrate mp3/acc/wma on a portable? assuming the portable has perfect output, then u gotta consider lugging around a headphone amp + headphones worth atleast a cnote... or audiophile speakers...

I think that's only partially it, and is due to the young age of the average iPod user (I say user because the average iPod buyer is the average iPod user's mom or dad). The iPod also is backed by an enormous marketing campaign. I'm sure at least 90% of people buying things do no research at all, instead relying on advertisements they see and what everyone else has. Those doing research would see that the only things it has on any other player is its size (which ties in with its low battery life) and its UI. Don't say firewire, in the real world it's equal to usb. They also benefitted from great timing.

Flac support is more a matter of convenience. Many have their favorite albums encoded to flac and it would be an unnecessary time-consumer to convert them just for a DAP that doesn't support it. Many also use their DAPs as a backup for their music collection and would want the flacs on there. What a spacewaster if you can't even play them and you need them duplicated in mp3 just to hear them on the DAP. Further, while most probably couldn't tell the difference on the sh*tty headphones that come with most DAPs, anyone with a discerning ear will buy aftermarket phones, or use already-owned quality phones. By quality I don't necessarily mean a thousand-dollar setup, just something better than the utter trash that comes with most players. This can be well under $100, suggesting lugging an amp and/or speakers around with a DAP is ridiculous, and shows that your argument isn't really serious.

And damn, sorry, but that 'y ur 2 ne1 u' sh*t makes you look retarded 😛

heh u shoulda seen the early rios. i had the first. rio pnp32 or something. gah, cheap build quality, and sound quality that was so pathetic that u could probably get away with using 128kbs mp3. well u sorta had to almost with 32mb only😛 and they were stuck in that rutt for an incredibly long time, spitting out pos product after pos product. only after the ipod kicked them in the @ss did they even start to try. kinda sad really.

loss less just apeals to me, i can be somewhere else and upload a track on another computer to be burnt or what have you and not worry about it encoding and something be 'missing' to its sound. not to mention i still like putting cd's in cd players, call me old fashion, but until something can replace that kind of experience im hesitant

Get the Rio from a 30 day store and see if you like it. My friend brags about the Ihp 120 all the time so when my Nomad Jukebox 3 broke I decided to test one out from Fry's. Coming from Creative's interface I hate it. It's nowhere near as intuitive (IMO the ability to control the volume from anywhere is a must but I dont think you can do that on the Iriver). I liked the way the Nomad created a playlist on the fly so I could easily find songs that I've recently listened to or like a lot.

If you're used to the Ipod interface you should definitely "test" out the Rio first.

I'll be returning the Iriver and getting a Zen Touch instead. No argument from me since I'll be saving $300 (I'm getting it for free 🙂)

Good choice  I am listening to my Zen Touch right now. Zen Touch + Sennheiser MX500 = musical heaven.

WMA has lossless format too (in Windows Media Player 10)
