I sold a working motherboard (I was using it prior to shipping)...I am told it wouldn't boot and questioned if the northbridge chipset was bad.

Apparently the fan won't spin now. Still I don't think this would kill the chipset regardless unless ran like that for quite a while...supposedly the BIOS even is inaccessible.

What would be a good solution? The trader has only a few trades.

He suggested splitting the difference and he ships it back...I somehow think it's a $10 northbridge fan that either died in transit or unpacking/mounting...they are rather fragile to begin with.

ideas welcome...if I didn't just drop $540 on my puppy getting bit at dog park I'd probably be more willing to just let it go.

I do want to be fair though. Never had this problem with anything I have sold in the past.

Does it boot up at all? The NB fan not spinning wouldn't cause it to not boot up (I don't think). But if it's not booting into the BIOS either it sounds like it could be a FUBAR mobo. 🙁

...or a nOOb who put the wrong CPU into it, or something equally dumb.

A refund would be the fairest thing to do, but if you think the board is good, then the 50/50 split may be wise.
NB fan ain't the problem though.

that'd be my assumption..ask him if he has the correct RAM + CPU in, and if all of the power connections are connected, IE if it has a 4 pin/8pin near the CPU.

Heck my grandparents' PC's northbridge fan seized up and the computer ran that way for two years with no problem... Hot yes, but it ran fine.

claims he knows the cpu, ram and video card are good...yet doesn't have a MB to test as his current one died hence the need for mine.

I am hoping he didn't try a non-socket 939 cpu somehow...

I told him the fan should not stop the BIOS from posting. Windows perhaps.

I am hoping all the serial numbers match up when it comes back.
