You're right. One person seems to have been able to do it and he looks to be 16th and 19th in the queue. Like I said, the info is unconfirmed. It came from an eVGA Moderator and not a representative of the company. I'll edit my original post.

this is copied from nvidia's website in a faq about sli...

Can I mix and match graphics cards is one of them is Overclocked by the Manufacturer?
Yes. A GeForce 7800 GTX that is overclocked (for example BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC) can be mixed with a standard clock GeForce 7800 GTX.

here is the link

http://www.slizone.com/page/slizone_faq.html#c2

so you can get a 7900gt overclocked from factory and just toss in a regular one later and it will work.

edit: rofl bad grammer on their website...but lol its read just like that.

god damn it to hell. Wish I was there sooner. I also bought an x1900xt -- would have been better to remember the step up and only pay $200 :-(

I see that the step-up allows CO and CO superclocked now, so I cancelled my order and picked a CO (Just to make sure that the price is higher than $310 that I paid for my 7800 GT CO SE. Now I am #17 in queue :-(

With a week to spare, I'm bumping my 516 to a 256-P2-N563-AX. No prices on the site, but if the price list above holds, it'll be $20 for the upgrade and $15 for shipping. They're available now at Newegg for $299. Maybe I should buy one from there and have it rocking while the other one goes back. Hmmmm.....

why wouldn't evga have stock in any of these cards?!

i mean...did they just pass them on to the other etailers?!

i'm afraid i would have to wait literally for weeks or even months like the people who wanted to step up to the 512 gtx

I was thinkng about doing the step up also.
I bought my 7800gt a couple of weeks ago for 295 minus 45 dollars worth of rebates. (250 total.)

If i do the step up thing to a 7900gt - do I have to pay the difference between 250 and their price? Or 295 and their price?

What is the price of the 7900gt? Does it go by neweggs price or MSRP?

Also: I have been hearing conflicting reviews. Some saying that the difference between the 7800gt and the 7900gt is only a few FPS - others i hear is that the 7900gt will yield a 30% increase in FPS?

Because they'll only have a certain % of thier stock earmarked for step up. Let's face it step up will be of less interest to the company than selling new cards to new customers. The wait won't kill you ;)

number 43 for the standard 7900GT, i want the CO but it's $20 more and i want to buy an NV silencer soon anyway.

triggerhappy, the 7900GT is a 7800GTX with slightly higher core and memory clock, it should OC to 7800GTX 512 speeds easily though. look up the article on the main site

You mean a 7800gtx 512mb? And as speeds, you mean core and memory clocks or FPSs?

I did look at the artical but for some reason they only compared the card to SLI cards? Am I missing something?

Also on newegg they have two verisons of the 7900gt. One being clocked higher. Is that the only reason why its 40 dollars more?

don't core and memory clocks reflect FPSs? i mean it as i said, it is slightly faster than a GTX (256) at stock and can OC to 512 speeds easily because it is 90nm.

Just threw my name in the hat for a 7900GT OC (from a 7800GT OC). I am #22 in the que. Should cost me like $16.95 total for the new card and S&H. Sweet deal!

For those wanting to know, $11.95 is the cheapest S&H charge eVGA offers. Also be sure that you have the original purchase invoice as well as all original packaging AND contents!

If you need help remembering what came in the box, in addition to the videocard itself, take a look at this picture.
