I just got my car towed away while it was parked in MY OWN spot. Some idiot called up a towing company claiming that I was parked in his spot and thats all it took. Don't these stupid tow truck drivers at least verify that the caller is telling the truth before they haul a car away. Now it will cost me $165 to get it back. What do you think I should do.

If you know who requested the tow then send the bill to him! Contact the management of the complex and ask for their assisstance. Do you have proof of what spot your car is supposed to occupy, and proof that it was parked there? Does the tow truck company have a record from what spot they towed the vehicle? I think you need to call the Police first and get them involved, if possible.

Are you sure this isn't just some scam artist bastard tow truck driver who just claims that he was called to remove an illegally parked car?

I have proof from the management that I've owned the space for over a year now. I have no idea where my car is since the caller didn't even bother to leave a note for me. I called every company in the phone book and found the right one but they for some reason refuse to tell me who towed it or where the car is, just gave me a price. This guy has the nerve to park his car in my space after he towed my car away...won't be for long though.

Make sure you get a desription of the car and the license plate # of the car parked in your spot so you can identify the jerk who towed your car, if in fact it is his car! Be careful. Like I said, I think you need to call the Police to resolve this.

call the cops (not 911, but the regular number) and ask them. they will have it on record if it's a legit tow.

if the tow person is a scam artist, then he/she won't have called it in to the authorities and it is illegal for him to tow it.

sucks man.........

i saw this happen the other day -- i was picking up my gf from her apt, and i was waiting outside -- and a towtruck came to tow a car -- and right when the car was loaded on the truck, the dude came running out of an apt saying it was his car,and it was his spot. the guys who called it in were there watching the towtruck tow it away, and things got pretty hairy........but i had to leave before i saw what resulted..

Call the police and get them involved. While you are waiting for them to get there from the donut shop have the car in your spot towed.

Still can't find the car...but the good news is that I have four rolls of duct tape sitting in my desk. Let it stick overnight and the glue from this tape is nearly impossible to get off;)

I wouldn't do anything drastic since it'll easily trace back to you...I would let the authorities handle this...

you've never know what kind of crazy nut is parked in yer space..

Nope, first I thought it was just a joke so I called up everyone I knew to make sure that they weren't responsible. I'm guessing that its someone that couldn't find parking in westwood or maybe someone new to my building. Not touching their car until I get mine back though because I still have no idea where it is right now.

dude call the cops, report your car stolen, cause you left it where it belongs and its not there, pretend you dont know jack about it, and then let the cops file a report. that way you should not be liable for the tow fee and you could possibly get that ahole into problems.

i'm with DAM on this one, report the car stolen. but do tell police everything you know. the towing company towed your car away from your own space, and it was not you who authorized the towing. i think the police would require the towing company to release all the information regarding the towing and the individual who made the phone call, and it would go on the record. simply present all this information to the manager's office, and the manager should take care of it. i think the manager has the right to bill tenants for any damages that was incurred by them. if worse comes to worst, you can always try small claims court.

I agree with DAM's suggestion... When you parked your car in your own space and it's not there anymore, people's first reaction would think it got stolen... So just call the cops and tell them it was stolen... No one would know you called all the companies in the phone book and found out your car was actually towed...

I think there's alsolutely no reason for you to pay the tow fee... you did nothing wrong and you should not be out $165 to get it back...

Reporting it stolen would've been the first thing I did. How did you know it was towed anyhow(I mean even before you called everyplace in the phone book)?

I suspected it was towed when I saw another car parked in its place. Not many thieves steal a car and replace it with their own.

Another vote for reporting it stolen. I hope the people that did this get nailed.

Add another vote to reporting it as stolen. Although I would let them know about the ransom note (ie the message from the towing company). And I would have the vehicle in your spot towed away.

Report it stolen.

Just don't do something stupid like key his car like moron above said. Thats just dumb and immature. Scratch the duct tape also. Do the right thing and report it.
