Hadn't seen it posted, but was interested in it...maybe

Currently have the Inspiron 9300 in my sig

Toshiba P105-S921
17" TruBrite (1440x900)
Geforce 7900GS
1GB (5300)
160GB HD SATA (4200rpm, yuk)
T2400 (Duo 1.83Ghz)
Super media drive (DVD/RW)
HK Speakers
Intel 3945 Wireless (no Atheros :()
7.2lbs
$1999 retail

I'm curious what the card will be clocked at, seeing as how Toshiba's strongest suit isn't thermal management...

Assuming street is closer to $1800, it seems like a pretty decent rig. I'd swap the HD and put in 2GB of ram.

The 7900GS is slower than a 7800GTX though :( But this isn't quite competing with the XPS, Alienware, etc.

If you can overclock the GPU decently, I'd be interested...

Yeah, that thing looks pretty stout. I've been contemplating replacing my desktop in favor of something in a 17" flavor notebook like this. How is Toshiba in Quality lately? I bought a satellite for my mom a little over a year ago, and it is having video problems that look driver related, but could be hardware. After some research, it lookes like a common problem with that particular series notebook, so, I'm a little hesitant about another Toshiba. The specs look great though.

I've just ordered one of these, and I will check back when it arrives with a mini-review and some benchmarks.

From looking at the specs alone, the two things I'm not so keen on:

Lower resolution display than many competing models. Only 1440x900.
4200RPM HD

However, it seems that, for the price, it is a good deal.

So..lets see here....$1999 and you have to put another $300 into it for a decent HD and another GB of memory...hmm. At $2399 that doesnt sound so great. You are in the Dell M170 price range now and that should blow this Toshiba offering right out of the water.

I still don't get the point of Desktop Replacment laptops, just get a full featured Desktop for half the cost.

I worked on a Toshiba Qosmio last month and was awed by its size. My goodness, it was huge; especially when compared with the I600Ms and I6000s that I have been accustomed with.

It really to big for me to haul around but if its your thing, well.....

The Toshiba is well designed and constructed and since this is the first one I've seen in a few years, I can't speak about its durability. Haven't heard anything off color on the T's, so if its your choice.....

Well some folks want the power of a desktop but the convenience of it being semi-portable.

I just bought it, should be here in about two weeks depending on how many times UPS destroys it.

QFT, and you get better res with the XPS M1710 too. Toshiba offers a higher resolution with the customizable P100, but don't offer a 7900 with it. They can't seem to quite put two and two together, otherwise I'd probably be buying.

The E1705 from Dell seems to be a better deal, especially with coupons. I priced it out at $1800 with 1 gig, 1.83 Core Duo, and 7900gs.

I don't get how people expect gaming laptops to have high resolutions. It just wouldn't work

I agree. It's not bad for a Toshiba, but I wouldn't consider any laptop a gaming laptop with a 4200RPM HD... and IMO with only 1GB of RAM.

Because some of us want a portable computer. No doubt you're going to say this isn't portable... yeah, i may not use this on my lap, but i don't even use my 700m on my lap. But this is more portable than even the smallest SFF with monitor and keyboard. I carry my iXPS2, which is over 10lbs (including the powerbrick here) to and back from work EVERYDAY.

2.0ghz, mobility x700, 100gb 5400 HD, 1gb ram, 1680x1050 display, DVD-R...

all for 1200, not too bad...

Just ordered Toshiba Qosmio G30, not really for gaming, but that 17" 1080P screen and built in HD-DVD + TV Tuner is a winner for me. 2 5400rmp drive doesn't hurt either. Bad news it is very short supply up here in igloo country (Canada).

Ditto here.... I just chauk it up to personal preferance and the type of games you want to play.

For FPS I prefer natural resolution at high frame rates to scalling or stuttering frames on excessivly high res displays. So you'd think people would be pleased to see 1440x900 paired with a 7900GS.

Sure, if it had a semi-portable/practical 12-14" screen to go along with it. But no, it's an unwiedy 17" at 1440x900. Not only does that makes desktop usage suck, it's ugly with the huge dot pitch sizes.

Why do these companies insist on 17" screens for high-end laptops? It's so aggravating.

I agree, aside gaming for the moment , 1440x900 is present on dekstop monitors of that size. Any productivity work will suffer. Maybe 1900x1200 present on 17" Dell E1705 is to small. But 1680x1050 on 17" would be kind of good compromise - and games can be played on that resolution with high end graphic card that 7900 GS is.

It is jsut that companies are cutting costs with sub-par displays. More and more 15" laptops come with only 1280x800 as option; and 17" inch ones with 1440x900, which is just as bad.

1080P on the Qosmio G30 is nice. 1920x1200x16.7 million colours. Still waiting for the damn thing to get here... I tell ya, Canada is as third world as Pakistan when it comes to computer hardware. Spreadsheets are going to be great, word is going to be hell.
