Just called Onvia CSR. He didn't know whetehr this was a black version or not; he checked the "distributor's information" and reported that it also did not specify color.

O.K. So who going to try this out?

Woo Hoo!

Decided to straight to the source. Called the Toshiba Storage Division. The gentleman said the B stands for Bulk. So, anything with a B after it means that it was purchased in bulk originally from Toshiba. Without the B, just means that it was purchased from Toshiba as a single unit. There is no difference in the drive itself, and it is not refurbished.

Just when the reseller bought it, it was sold in bulk quantity (cheaper pricing).

Yeehaa! Just ordered mine! I came across a Japanese website that had this model described as "BULK", and came here to post the info, and seems Tigereye had broken the news, from an authoritative source.

Nice deal.

What about the 16x Toshiba SD-M1502-S that buy.com has for $79.95?

Any noticeable difference?

Difference between 12x and 16x drives? Let me ask you this. Did you notice a difference between your 32x and 40x cd-rom?

Unless you rip DVD's into Divx files, I suspect you would never know the differnece. Except the 12x might be quieter.

Anybody figure out why the big difference in shipping weight between the SD-M1402-S at $66.78 (7lbs) vs. the SD-M1402B at 2.5 lbs? I can't imagine just the box would make up 4.5 lbs? Maybe there's some extra goodies?

S is for the single pack drive. Probably has manuals, cable, etc.
B is for the bulk. Nothing except the bare drive.

The Toshiba DVD is definitely an excellent drive. I had originally purchased the Toshiba 6x DVD SD-M1212 (RPC1 - region free), and later upgraded to the Toshiba 12x SD-M1402(RPC2 - non region free). I had zero problems with either drive when used in combination with Sigma Designs Real Magic Hollywood Plus decoder card. Movies play great when played through my home theater setup. I'm not in any despair for another drive, but if I did, Toshiba would be it. If the price dips any lower, I think I'll grab a few more (in the event I build more systems).

What are the min and max DAE ranges. I currently have a Toshiba 6X 1212 drive and it does DAE at between 4X and 8X. I would like to have a drive that does about 8X minimum--to keep my 8X burner happy.

I'm glad people thought it was a good enough deal to jump on. I did not post it as a separate post since it was only $4 cheaper than Buy.com, where you could use ebates, dash, stockback or your fav. rebate site, or a combination of them...
I still want to find out is there a way to play disks other than region 1 on this player... Would anyone have good info?

Ordered my drive this afternoon, already have shipping confirmation. Reminds me of the old Onvia days.

Here's a link to the region free patch with flash utility. PLEASE READ THE INFO - newer firmware may not be flashable - check yours first!:

I believe the drives shipped now have firmware v.1000, which won't allow you to hack the region lock.

If this has firmware V. 1000, I'm definitlely returning it. First not black, but bulk with out the screws, cable, manual, etc., now it may not even be firmware upgradable to be region free. Hold off on this not so hot deal.

I don't see the lack of a region free hack making this not a hot deal. There are lots of people on here who don't care about a region free DVD player. This isn't a bash or anything, but I still think the deal is WAY hot.

I have a question. I've had a Pioneer DVD drive on another computer for 18 months now. I loaded region free firmware on it the day I got it. And you know, I've never used it. Why, practically every fricking movie I can think of in made in the US, or if it is not, is released in the US before it is elsewhere, and at a lower price? Who in the US really needs "region free."

It makes sense if your European, because often times movies are available in US before they are even released in Europe, and they can often buy it cheaper in the US, even after shipping.

The exceptions I can think of are limited: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon DVD was available on DVD in Asia, and has not yet been released in U.S. O.K., that one. A few movies are available in soem regions but not others (I recall Edward Scissorhands and a few other titles were available in Japan but not the US, but that had more to do with DIVX studios trying to block out DVD releases. They cost a fortune anyway.

So, I think region free is good to have just in case, but unless you live outisde the US or Canada, does it really matter?

Tigereye, are you reading my mind? You've done it again! I was typing my "it doesn't matter" post, only to find once I post, you've just said the same thing. Freaky.:D

My thinking exactly. I cannot imagine myself ever owning a non-region 1 DVD. I just don't have the time or need for DVDs from other regions. I guess that other folks do, and that's fine. For them this drive won't work as well. But, for the average user, it is a great deal.

Never underestimate the will and determination of the Otaku. If it can't play region 2 Anime then why buy it?
