Me versus *insert supposed NNTP expert*, we will name off random media of all kinds and go find it. I can guarentee that I could name many, many things that you would never find on newsgroups. And probably wouldn't get even after weeks or even months of requesting on various groups - which I could find within minutes.

Reply back to my PM, I'm at work so I obiously can't do anything from here - but when I get home I can send you a screenshot. You name something and send me a screen shot of where you found it on NNTP. And I'll name something and send you a screen shot of where I found it on BT, each of us will try to find that something and send the screenshots back. Any rules or whatever we can work out.

It all depends on the torrentsite..

Stats from the thepiratebay: 1513443 peers (1277584 leechers + 235859 seeders)
This is why you dont get good download speeds from PB.

From some other torrentsite:
Peers 37,697
Seeders 34,691
Leechers 3,006
Seeder/leecher ratio 1154%

There are very few things that you could name right now that I couldn't find on BT. I can find anything on BT. Newsgroups are still good, don't get me wrong - but you can't find anything with a few simple searches. Although you can make requests and have people get things for you that aren't around at the time, you can do that very same thing on a lot of BT sites I'm on. .torrent is definetely > NNTP but only if you know what your doing and have the patience to get on the good sites

And as for the speed argument - like I said, you guys are just n00bs to the BT scene. Of course you won't max your connection using a demonoid tracked torrent or something you got on PB, because not everyone has to share to a 1:1 ratio. Get on sites that require a 1:1 sharing ratio or better (otherwise they get booted) and its more then easy to max out your connection.

usenet doesn't require a 1:1 to get everything you want.

Thats what makes BT what it is.

I'm sure you and others here are OK with DL'ing all day from NNTP while others do all the work, but thats how the scene dies - and also the reason why Newsgroups have since been overtaken as the best form of finding media online. (which it was the best way long ago) In other words, thats why News sucks these days - too many leechers and not enough people sharing content.

O RLY? Your argument sucks since comparing a 1:1 ratio on usenet to BT is apples+oranges. BT just requires that you upload as much as you download to get good speeds but it doesn't require you to ever upload a single unique file so how can you correlate the two since newgroups work in a completely different fashion?

Just shut up every one. It's obvious us on the Usenet side won't convince the BT/P2P side to switch and vice versa. Each method has it's pluses and minues, so neither method is better than the other. This is a personal preference which way we leech. Let's just leave it at that.

you have riaa/mpaa behind your back with torrents. I don't think they will ever go after newsgroup users.

For all you people out there who claim BT is better than newsgroups, I've got one thing to say:

alt.binaries.hdtv

:D

If you can even find this stuff on BT, good luck leeching it in less than a few days. Usenet == blistering fast, BT == crap speed.

i bet those ppl who claim BT is better than NG has never used it.
speed = newsgroup FULL speed of your connection, 0 uploading required; BT - ratio this ratio that, private server what?, not likely to reach max speed
availablility = NG - there for however long your news server has it (giganews 70+ days to get what u want; try that with BT)
legal = danger to use BT cuz all that uploading sharing; newsgroup - a part of internet from the beginning, not likely to be shutdown)

drawbacks of newsgroup - price, cost to pay for premium server if ur ISP's news server sucks (has low completion rate and retention), BT sometimes has newer stuff cuz ppl haven't figure out newsgroups(?), and technical things > using quickpar to recover, setting up newsgroup program to download.

hahaha, torrents are lame!!!!

Newsgroups win hands down:

1. Constant speed
2. Great search websites, that aren't illegal, ascii indexes aren't illegal
3. don't have to upload anything
4. par & par2 files
5. retention, it's always there, I don't have to worry about if I've missed something
6. 8+ connections to the news server

BT is for newbs!!!

I use www.newzbin.com (sign up so you can get better searches, you don't have to pay to sign up)

AND THEN!!!, I use binsearch.info to make my nzb files. Easy as pie, and I don't have to download 4 million headers!

Funny I was thinking the same thing about the NG users. Chances are none of the people posting here are on a SINGLE decent BT site, or they wouldn't all be so naive. Prove me wrong.

And in the same principal, NG is for old people who don't know anyone in order to get better non-public access to things. Trust me, I used to use nothing but NG, but that was before I discovered the "underground" BT scene. The only thing that can even come close to it is if your on 0day FTP sites and/or you have access to the invite only DC++ servers. I can pretty much guarentee that I'm on some underground trackers that nobody on this forum has even heard of. And no, of course I'm not going to give you information on them, thats how these things stay underground.

Public newsgroups are for the n00bs.

wasn't there some hack with BT that changes the ratio of uploaded vs downloaded, so essentially you're free to dl at max speed?

I work for newsgroups.

So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.

But trust me.... You don't.

I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you dont know what you are talking about.

This is how bad info gets passed around.

If you dont know about the topic....Dont make yourself sound like you do.

BitComet .59 and perhaps some other versions had this. All of the private trackers I've seen banned that client after the exploit was found. You can still use it on all of the public trackers, but I don't see the point since most of them don't track ratio's any way, just turn your up speed all the way down.

This coming from the spider master. Maybe you can further explain who and what your referring to, or you can just leave us hanging - we're used to that.
