You can't go wrong with a 460, at 100 bucks who cares what comes out next. You'll be able to play everything pretty darn smooth with a decent CPU and jump on whatever new tech you want having wasted little money on a mid range GPU selection.

But that CPU is not up to par so it's time you get yourself into a quad core of some kind as others have stated.

There have already been reports of delays before. Plus, these cards don't just pop out of thin air. No pictures of the PCB, no leaked specs, nothing... it always happens before release. Leaks.

Not only that but the focus seems to be on low power mobile parts right now. New year is only about 6 weeks away. If I were placing bets I'd bet they would keep the current gen around for the time being, then after the holiday start ramping up new GPUs.

Looks like you definitely haven't been paying attention. We already have leaks and AMD has demonstrated working 28nm GPUs ever since June. TSMC themselves said they and their partners prepared themselves better for 28nm than 40nm and are having less yield issues and the node is already in full volume production.

Delays were for the GCN, or the HD 7900 series. Those may or may not launch in January. Everything points to a Dec or Jan release for the HD 7800 series and not later than that; after all, it's just a die shrink of Cayman with slightly higher clocks. Maybe you should stop pulling things out of your behind.

However IMO the point is moot anyway as it's pretty clear the OP should focus on a total system upgrade and not just GPU. So it might be the only option to wait it out.

I wouldn't be so quick dismiss January, there's been recent reports that production of 28nm parts at TSMC are in full production and AMD has stuck by there original projections to have them out by the end of the year. Even if the are mobile parts desktop should follow shortly there after. Everything I have read seems to point to 28nm being here sooner rather then later.

Nope. Next month or January. The HD 7800 cards are in volume production as we speak.

As far as quantities goes, it'll obviously be low to medium in availability at the beginning. Same thing happened with the HD 5000 series. What you're forgetting is that these new cards will deliver much higher performance at previous Performance market price points: $150 to ~$250. The HD 7850 promises to bring slightly-higher-than HD 6950 performance for a lot less.

i'm not sure i would bother with the ssd caching. i just install os and programs on the ssd, videos and stuff are plenty quick enough on disk. it just seems unnecessary for home use.

It IS based on leaked info. As of now no new leaked info has come to light, so this is more than probably right. It's too late for specs apart from clock speeds to change, anyway.
