Torn on selling the Mustang for a 4 door

I have 2 little ones, a Camry, a Mazda6 wagon and two liter bikes in the garage.
That and a huge ass life insurance policy.

If you already have a family car and only occasionally bring the kids along, keep the Mustang. No need for 2 family cars unless te crossover isn't cutting it anymore. In that case just replace the crossover for a minivan.

I came in here to post just this. OP, you have two boys and a family vehicle already? Fast forward a few (and far too short) years. Although your choice of a Sonata 2.0T is a great choice, your boys would love the Mustang much more when you are dropping them off at school or teaching them to pick up and use a wrench for the first time.

You already have a family hauler. You only need one of those. Sell it and get a van or minivan. Crossovers pale in comparison to minivans for families with young/multiple children. Too many compromises. Sliding doors FTW!

I actually just got off the phone with a Ford dealer that has a loaded ST3 with a 30,230 sticker price that I can get for $25735. Very tempting.

Used or new? Sounds hot if its new, if not see if you can drop them another $1k.

Threads like these make me want to sell my 328 and buy a ridiculous coupe before I somehow end up with kids.

I agree though why does he have to give a fun car to have kids. I'd suggest an impreza or wrx as well.

Friend of mine has a focus st2 and its pretty awesome so good choice if you get it. I think the st3 is a bit expensive but you can't get hids without it. If you are open to waiting you could look at the fiesta st but its not much cheaper

Sure they can but they usually aren't suited well for hauling a family around, don't get great mpg, and also aren't usually designed with safety first in mind. But if looking cool while screaming Yolo out the window while driving 100mph trumps that then by all means Yolo dawg.

Are you being serious or trolling here? You sound like you'd be real fun to hang around

Hes the one that rolled a fox body mustang because "he lost control"

Sounds like he has problems controlling himself. I daily drive my JB4 335i and haven't had a single problem, and I'm a "financially irresponsible reckless" 27 year old.

Drove the ST over the weekend. It was pretty nice and I think you could fit a back seat or two in there, granted your seat isn't all the way back.

Car isn't really that fast TBH. I slammed the pedal down, and yes I went "fast" but it wasn't a 'push me back into my seat' fast. The interior was nice and MFT was cool, though.

What about a CTS?

I had a kid and sold my A4 and Hayabusa and snagged up a 350z... Car seat fits in just fine and the punkin loves it. Air bag shuts off...

Don't think you can't have a fun car because you have kids. Some of my fondest memories growing up were about being in my dads cool cars.

I have a 2012 Mustang. Just broken in with 15k miles. I bought it new and love the car, but since I purchased it my wife has had a baby and we have another on the way (I guess my boys can swim).

I'm really starting to feel the limitations of having a two door vehicle. My wife has a nice crossover that we use for all family stuff but every now and then I've got to fit the baby seat in the mustang which isn't easy, and will be impossible with two. Because of that I've caught the itch to sell it for a more practical 4 door.

The car I really want is a focus ST, but those are going for around $26k in the package I want (ST2+). I'll probably get around $17-$18k for the mustang and it kills me to think about dropping an additional $8-9k on a vehicle that won't be any faster. The mustang is bare bones with just the 6 speed manual and 3:31 gears. I find myself missing an upscale interior and gadgets like bluetooth.

So I've been thinking about alternatives, and I'm actually considering the Hyundai Sonata SE 2.0T. I can get a brand new one that has all the fun gadgets and nice interior I want for $21k, marked down for a $27k. This seems much more reasonable to me than the ST but I am not in love with the exterior styling of the vehicle. I prefer the Kia Optima if I'm being honest but for some reason those are like $3-4k more, so if I'm considering that I'd just get the ST instead.

Any other recommendations? If I could straight up trade the mustang for a fun 4 door vehicle that has as low miles and is reasonably fun to drive I'd be golden.

Eh?, how do you go from a Pony to a Hyundai Sonata......or Kia for that matter?

Nissan claims that the Maxima performs like the 350z. They were advertising it as a sporty family car a while back.

They have basically been doing that since they 80s.

My Dad actually bought one since it was like a 300z according to the ads. A 1989 "4dsc" (4 door sports car in Nissan marketing back then) traded in a Toyota van for it. I was 8 and I remember how awesome it was for road trips. Had 190 HP i-6 back when that was a lot of power.

I don't think they've advertised that for quite a while (the late 80s/early 90s like hans007 said). I had an '00 Maxima and while it had sufficient power (222hp I think), it was not particularly sporty. It was much less fun in the corners than the Mazda6 I had a few years later.

It's been within the last few years (at least since the Quest makeover).

There was a commercial with a guy who is looking over his 350z in the driveway, then his wife comes out and says "we're pregnant!". Then he runs around and starts pulling, on all corners of the car and turns it into a Maxima. Then some tagline about sports car for the family.

There was a follow up commercial where the wife was getting a sono and the doc says "Congrats...triplets!". Then it flashes to an image of the new Quest.

As far as 4 doors, you really need to consider your height. I'm 6-3, and drive an '07 Impala as well as an '05 Equinox.

While the Impala is considered full size, there is no way the car seat would fit behind be directly. We have it in the middle and my seat presses against the car seat on the corner. My seat is all the way back, so if you're average height, you probably aren't back that far and won't have that kinda problem.

The Equinox, on the other hand, is more of a family car, and as such, they've given a plethora of room for passengers in the back seat. My seat could be all the back, and the person behind me would still have a good bit of room. Car seat fits fine regardless of seat position.

All that being said, in your quest to find a sporty car that is a four door, you may want to look around. Some cars give extra consideration to passengers in the back. That may eat into trunk space or whatever, but with two kiddos, you're going to need the space for two seats at some point. If you're tall, you'll want to keep your options wide open to find something with ample rear passenger space. If you're average height, you can look at pretty much any four door more or less, but I'd still hop in the back and see how much room there is with the front seat all the way back.

The Mustang won't be any more difficult to fit 2 kids into than 1! Keep the Mustang. You yourself said usually the crossover is used for family stuff. You're really going to give up your musclecar for something lame just for those few occasions? How does it feel giving up on the things you enjoy?

Depends on how tall the driver is. If he has the driver's side seat all the way back it can be an issue.

I also have a Mustang and a child. I didn't give mine up. We got a family car (AKA wife's car) to cart the child around. I did find that a rear facing seat would not fit behind me as the driver due to my height. I did only ever use the rear facing seat twice I think. Now she is in a booster seat and it fits fine and I take her for rides from time to time.

I traded in my 2 door Alero for a Ford Fusion last year. I got the Fusion hybrid, not a fast car but I'm getting 50mpg in the summer.

And this is why the Altima is one of the biggest douchemobiles on the road. They think they have some fast sporty car. Not.

was really worried since no one mentioned cts-v on the first page but you guys have taken care of it.
