You probably will want to give the 5200 to your gf and keep the 4200. :)

Soulkeeper, you just bought an MX card in FX clothing. You will be amazed at just how little it doesn't suck. I agree with the above post and keep your 4200 and give the 5200 to your gf. Unless of course she knows about vid cards and tries to shoot you for giving her a piece of crud card. This is coming from an Nvidia user. I like nvidia products EXCEPT for the MX series and the 5200FX series. 5600Ultra FC 400/800 is pretty good for the cash. 9600 pro is just a wee bit better but costs more. I think you would have been much better off getting another 4200.

My 2 shensh....

You should have gotten the Best Buy deal on the 5600 Ultra. I got mine for only $105. I'd doubt you'll find a lower price than that anytime soon. I'm happily going at 450/850. Next year I'll buy a new card to play games that are out then. Hate paying premium prices now for playing future games when they'll get old by next year.

There is one hell of a compelling argument to pick ATi over nVidia this go-round.
Keep smoking that crack, Devils Advocate, it will make you smart some day.

Yeah, buy weak cards for HL2 because even cards that are twice as fast can barely run it. It may come out by next summer too!

68 wasn't to bad, i was gonna get one myself, but i decided to wait till next month, and get a 9600xt when they come out, which i hope to last me a while, i've been on a Geforce 2mx200 for 2 years i think, which is 32mb SD ram, so anything will make a world of difference for me.

I say either get a Geforce3 Ti200 or a Geforce4 4200 64MB. Since you use Linux half the time, just use Nvidia.

Cool, your friend wasted $100, but you only wasted $68. Good job! ;)

Edit: Seriously, return it or cancel the order or whatever -- just don't open it! If you want DX9 support then save your pennies until you can afford a card fast enought to ake advantage of the DX9 goodies. I have not seen one single review that considers the 5200 (or 5200 Ultra) an acceptable option for those interested in DX9 features.

Edit2: The post a couple above mine is right on the money -- the 5200 is the FX version of the MX cards that were the low-end stuff for people that wouldn't pony up for the Ti cards. If you just want a stop-gap fix, you'd be way better off buying that refurb Abit Siluro Ti4200 off Newegg for $69. That flip chip 5600 Ultra people were snagging for $105 at Best Buy would be super nice if you can still find one!

Don't be dense. There are no cards for even CLOSE to this amount of money that will even come CLOSE to running DX9. $230> is the price of what feeble DX9 performance currently exists. Anyone who has less than a 9700 will NOT be playing DX9 games like HL2 in DX9, unless it's at 640X480.

That's exactly what I meant. He should save up if he's really interested, as it seems, in utilizing DX9 features. Were you saying I was being dense?!

Who's the dense one? All you did was confirm his post. That the 5200 is not realistically capable of playing a DX9 game despite it's technical ability to do so.

Don't worry about Rollo, he's just trolling lately. If you say anything good about an ATI card or bad about any Nvidia card, no matter how true your statement is, he'll flame you.

The $150 9600 Pro looked OK in the Valve benchmarks. 40+ fps in both 1024x768 & 1280x1024.
If 40 fps is too slow for you (you're one of those guys that requires 60+), run at 800x600. I enjoyed gaming in that res quite nicely up until recently.

for those of us that run 1024x768 with little or no AA a card like this is fine for even not yet released DX9 games

Shoulda bought a 8500/9100. They are the best value right now (cheaper than a ti4200/and has better performance in some games, and better iq). I just got a 9100 from new egg for 45 shipped, and its real nice!
