I really liked Torchwood, I liked the darker, more serious tone to the show, yet it also had its lighter, humorous moments. While there is a bit of sexuality running through the series, it's nowhere near what some are making it out to be.

I dunno. The episodes with Spike, from Buffy, were pretty much mansexfull.

I think people are just not comfortable watching a show that presents sexuality that isn't hetero or girl on girl.

Like any sci-fi show (even those regarded among the best like Trek or X-Files) there are bad filler episodes, but the overall story arch and characters are a lot of fun to watch. It definitely has a tongue in cheek take on sci-fi that is much more Dr. Who than what many US viewers are used to.
