For reasons I won't disclose here, I'll have to wait about 10-15 minutes after it airs before I can start watching it. The girlfriend and I usually spend Friday nights with some beers and a movie or something. Looks like it'll be Torchwood tonight. Has potential. Hope it's good.
 
I've seen it already, it's worth watching if you like the old Torchwood. They have the same writer too (Russel T Davies). Looking forward for the rest of the season.
 
i dont know for sure until i watch "children of earth" but i believe it is the same story line (i've watched up to "children of earth" and they appear to have left off from where that ended). but here's a quote (forgive me for using wikipedia as my source):

However, the deal with Fox did not go through and a new co-production deal with Starz was officially announced. so, i wouldn't say watching the previous show is a necessity, you'd miss a few things like "retcon" and the relationship between gwen and her husband developing but i think you can figure it out otherwise.
 
watching it now, Children of Earth seems a pretty good lead in to the current show, I'd recommend watching it beforehand.

Overall the episode is just okay. I realize it's just the first of 10 episodes, but it lacked that certain charm that Torchwood normally has. The best part of Torchwood was that it didn't take itself too seriously (it was a Doctor Who spinoff after all), but this episode was pretty damn serious.

Which on that note, the fact that Jack is now mortal drives me insane. Jack being unkillable was the series' big gag - the campy bit that made sure no one took it too seriously. Now he's just an American, in America.
 
Yeah, the show may lose some of its appeal if it becomes too Americanized, but we'll see. I think the mortality of Jack is only a short term thing and hopefully not a season long thing.

I forsee the not dying for other people being intricately linked with Jack's mortality.

As for the prior silliness of the show - I kind of like the idea of a more defined story instead of bad guy of the week. I guess we'll see how it plays out.

Jack is still around FAR into the future in Doctor Who, so unless they're running alternate timeline stuff, he has to live. Link.
 
OK...well, I never saw the original Torchwood...and I'm NOT a Dr. Who fan, (the original series kind of killed any interest for me) so I don't get some of the references in the show, but the first episode wasn't TOO bad. Definitely not "OMG!!!11one! Teh BESTEST SHOW EVAR!!", but far from the worst thing on television too.

Despite the revelation in Last of the Time Lords, the actual origin of the Face of Boe is still debated, with Davies himself waffling during the commentary for the episode as to whether Jack really is destined to become the Face of Boe.

Producer Julie Gardner, however, has been more assertive in this regard, most recently stating outright at the 2008 San Diego Comic Con that the Face of Boe is Jack Harkness.

Similarly, the Torchwood Declassified featurette from Torchwood Series 2 has John Barrowman, David Tennant and Russell T Davies stating that they believe the Face of Boe is Jack Harkness.
