The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Deus Ex
Baldur's Gate
Freedom Force
Planescape: Torment
World of Warcraft

Those are only really memorable ones. For whatever reason consoles rule this genre, esp playstations

I can only speak from my own experience. I don't believe that anyone can claim "this is the best RPG ever" - these games are really all a matter of personal opinion.

That being said. I've played several of the above mentioned RPGs - Dungeon Siege and the Baldur's Gate series are standouts for me. Of course Icewind Dale, NWN are great. But no game can ever compare to the first few years of EverQuest. No game is even close to the immersiveness. I'm not gonna try and argue that EverQuest is the greatest RPG ever. I can only say that it was the best for me. I know that EQ has changed a lot since it's first few years. I don't enjoy it nearly as much as I used to. (also don't have as much time) It may have been the fact that it was my first MMORPG.

I remember my first few dungeon crawls in EQ. Truly great gaming experiences. There was and has been for me nothing like it.

Of course, RPG's for the consoles and the PC's aren't the same. For example, Baldur's Gate and Finaly Fantasy are both RPG's, but very much different.

I enjoy both. :)

I had forgotten all about Ultima 7. I didn't care for Serpents Isle, just couldn't get into the animal factions. But I absolutely loved Ultima 7: The Black Gate.

Others have mentioned Arcanum as well. It was fun, but the combat system was absolutely awful. It also had one of the best cinematic openings of any game IMO.

Betrayal at Krondor?? Wow. "That's a name I've not heard in..." I had some friends who went ape for this game.

For me it was the early Ultima series that I enjoyed, The Avatar and such. I stayed away for quite a while until Baldur's Gate came out!

Wow.

My favorite genre is the Adventure Game. A solid and compelling story driven for a good single player experience. The best of the FPS games on the market do that well, Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight being a great example of this. I think a RPG game is at its best when it has a strong Adventure Game element to it. I am turned off by extremely open-ended games like Morrowind. It is an amazing game but it just does nothing for me. I want a purpose other than some subset of the three million odd quests available in the game. Otherwise I'm not compelled to keep playing and I drop it quickly just as I did when it came out.

The other great series is of course Fallout. Same thing for me as BG was. Awesome.

Here's one that will throw you for a loop and because of its hybrid nature it can be listed here under RPG's: X-Com: UFO Defense . Yes it is a turn-based tactics and strategy game but it has strong roll playing elements in it as well that really add an amazing amount to the game. This game is, hands-down, the best 150+ hours I've ever spent playing a computer game. :) Nuts huh?

Morrowind was for me, the most replayable, and hands down best RPG created to thiss point. I think I've dumped solid months into the game + expansions + Modded stuffs.

It's getting on in age now, so the graphics aren't as stunning, and the NPCs aren't as engaging, as some of the newer titles, but it is still very enveloping as long as you follow in some way, one of the main quest lines, be it a faction questline, the expansion questlines, or the Main questline. If you just go a-wandering, your bound to get bored at some point.

The combat style is kinda dubious, but I usually use a bow or magic, so it doesn't often get to that point. But I also like the story, above and beyond the combat system. It's really engaging to me. And some of the enviroments are pretty scary, the first time you enter a crypt, or the Red Mountain, your bound to get a racing heart. Even dwemer ruins will raise your blood pressure.

I think you'd like it. It's fun and engaging. PLus Game Of The Year version isn't even expensive anymore for several hundred hours worth of gameplay.

Yeah. That is exactly why I have stopped playing RPG's. Just way too much of a time requirement built into these games and I don't have the time to even begin a game like this anymore. It'd take me 2-3 years to finish one of these now. A 15-25 hour game like the Splinter Cell series is the best I can manage now. It sucks getting older.

I've been playing Morrowind for a few years now. Can't wait for Oblivion to come out. I'll have to try some of the others mentioned here as well.

Ultima IV will always stand out as one of the best rpgs of all time.

For contemporary games, KOTOR and EQ2 are my two most recent favorites.

Anyone ever play Ultima Underworld? Far better than any other FPS at the time, how many 3d games from 1992 could you jump in?

"Anyone ever play Ultima Underworld?"

I saw it on the back cover of a gaming magazine and fantasized about how great it would be, but I was only 12 then and had too little money. Plus, I'm sure it would've been a slideshow on my 286-12MHz with 512 KB RAM.

So, I'm a HUGE diablo 2 fan, and I was wondering what other games capture the style of that game, preferrably online play. i know im not gonna get the online community thats like battle.net but if there is a game which alot of people are on so its easy to find a game thats what im looking for. I've heard Sacred is pretty close to hitting the mark, so im having that shpped to me right now. Any others?

Re: WoW. The game is so fun and easy to get into, so i can see why it has been reviewed so well. However, i've played the game for about 4 or 5 months, and once I hit 60 (mage) the game died. There is so little content at 60, you're basically just running the same 3 instances over and over for loot which is eventually replaced by guild raids anyway. And the pvp, when it comes down to it, is nothing like blizzard hoped. Basically just a lag fest for most people

I'm also looking for a Diablo-2 style game that has good online co-op play. Does Gothic 2 give you this? I guess if all else fails, I'll wait for Dungeon Siege 2.

Re: dungeon siege

i bought dungeon siege LOA on a friends recommendation, and i pretty much got bored with it in about 2 hours. You simply dont do anything in the game. Your basically watching the computer play the game for you and once in awhile clicking move. Oh, and you do some laborious item switching and inventory navigation, but thats about it. I will admit that watching the computer play is somewhat entertaining for awhile. Is it enough to last you the entire game? Hell no

When I took it online, it does have a decent sized online community, however unfortunately the play online doesnt get much better, your still just basically following the party around and watching your character auto play for you.

It definitely lacks the adrenaline pumping, controlled slaughterfest that d2 has, and that i'm now looking for in other games.
