Top Gear: America

Another try....

http://www.autoblog.com/2010/04/21/breaking-top-gear-america-reborn/

I think the fact that it will be on the History Channel will give it a much better shot at happening. Don't know the hosts well enough to know if they will do a good job...although obviously they'll never top the chemistry of Clarkson/May/Hammond.

Hopefully they don't make a mockery of it and do stupid stuff like what Jay Leno did with his take on the "star in a reasonably priced car".

The problem is that there are no hosts like the british ones, without Jezza, Captain Slow and the Hamster, it's something but not Top Gear.

It's more an entertaining Car show, mainly focused on entertainment.

Agreed...but I'll certainly give it a chance. I'm not expecting Top Gear...they won't be able to replicate that...but a decent car show here in the states would be nice. I'll still watch the UK Top Gear obviously. :awe:

Thats what im hoping for. If they try to just duplicate the show it'll fail. If they come up with their own ideas and style it might be good.

Worth watching a few times atleast.

QFT-That was the absolute dumbest thing I ever saw in my life and horribly uninteresting.

I'm really hoping this one goes through. Tanner Foust is a stellar driver, has a ridiculous amount of automotive knowledge, and is a decent TV host to begin with. The other two I've not heard of, but they sound like they could be pretty good.

When I heard Jay was doing something like the "Star in a Reasonably Price Car" it got me excited...but when I saw the execution, I was more disappointed than I would have been finding out that the girl I've been hitting on all night is a transvestite.

Yeah...Tanner Foust along with some decent funnymen could be a winning formula...but I don't know the other guys enough to say. They better not make this all stupid flashy either. At least that aspect of Top Gear UK I'd like to see copied. The cinematography/effects in Top Gear UK is stylish without being overly tacky.

I agree. I don't think it's totally JL's fault though, it was almost certainly the result of being cramped onto a little studio lot in the metro LA area. I'm sure he could have found a little track somewhere out of the city, but that would have been somewhat impractical to get stars to go to. Having it right outside the studio was probably the only way to get it greenlighted as a practical possibility. Unfortunately, it didn't translate into any kind of excitement, although I bet it sounded decent as a pitch. There's also something sexy about even an i4 buzzing through the revs, the electric vehicle they were using was eerily quiet which just added to the blahs.

I am a huge Adam Carolla fan, and I think he's honest, funny, and car-savvy enough to do a good job with Top Gear. Since he is not attached to this project, and I've never heard of two of the would-be hosts (though upon further research I guess I have seen Adam Ferrara in his role on Rescue Me), I have no basis for faith or confidence in the new show. I hope for the best but could easily imagine this turning out like the TG Australia show - an unwatchable imitation of the British show.

As you may recall, NBC took the first crack at producing a colonized version of TG, complete with hosts Tanner Foust, Adam Carolla and Eric Stromer. For whatever reason, the project went to the dumpster, and we haven't heard word one until now

the reason the (second) project went into the dumpster was the supergeniuses at NBC were reeling from the flop of the new knight rider, and obviously top gear and knight rider are the same thing, so.....

clarkson's only response was carefully crafted: "americans just don't get it."
1. it's consistent with his america bashing routine.
2. technically, it's true. the americans at NBC really don't get it.
3. it doesn't actually say anything.

of all the fox properties, i wonder why this is going on the history channel.

It makes sense to me...seems like the demographic that would like the something similar to the UK Top Gear would also be the ones watching the History Channel...not that Top Gear has anything to do with the History Channel...but anyhoo.

I think this would be better suited for Universal HD where there aren't any commercials and a lot of programming is geared toward autos.

Rutledge Wood is an idiot. It's obvious who they are trying to get him to emulate but he's not funny, just stupid.

I enjoyed the Australia version enough to watch it all. If the US version is at least that good, I'll watch it, too.

I just hope they don't suck on US automakers' nuts to please the crowd.

This will be horrible.

Speaking of the real Top Gear tho, when does that come back? I need a bit of Jezza in my life.
