What's on your top three burn list for games that you bought in 2012? The game itself could have come out earlier, but you had to have bought it this past year. My list (from worst to least worst):

Supreme Commander 2
Total War: Shogun 2
Payday: The Heist

Supreme Commander 2 sucked, nothing else to really say about it. Shogun 2 was simply a buggy mess for me that I have yet to reinstall and try again. Payday wasn't bad, but my friends and I got bored very quickly with the co-op.

The only one I can think of right now.

Cities XL2012: Would be an awesome game if it didn't run at 3 fps. It's not multi-threaded, keeping one of my cores at 100%. I want to be able to play it but the game is broken due to bad design decisions. They shouldn't be allowed to charge money for this.

Gettysburg: Armored Warfare
You Are Empty
Shadow Harvest: Phantom Ops

I don't feel burned because I got them all for extremely cheap or free. Also, playing terrible games can be fun sometimes, just for the novelty.

I would not consider any of the games listed in OP to be terrible. SupCom 2 is mediocre, but that's about it. If Payday and Total War are the worst games you bought all year, then I'd say congratulations.

Mass Effect 3. /thread

Everything else I bought turned out pretty well, but then again I am stingy.

I got Shogun 2 shortly after it came out and I think I had one random crash to Desktop (which didn't really matter thanks to autosave). Other than that it's run flawlessly.

My friend gifted me Terraria which he soon regretted as it went completely unplayed after the first 30 minutes :p

Space Marine wasn't a particularly bad game, but while I enjoyed the demo and the graphics and atmosphere I was really underwhelmed by the combat, the core of the game.

Ah! I forgot about Cities XL 2012. I think I bought it for $10 on a weekend deal. It's like Sim City, except not fun. And performance/optimization problems out the ass.

I'll consider that one a runner-up.

Yeah I'm very picky about the games I buy. I don't think either is terrible, but for me they are among the worst games I bought last year.

Mass Effect 3. /thread

If ME3 is the worst game you bought all year, then congratulations to you too.

Either you guys get very lucky with your game purchases, or you have extremely high standards. ME3 isn't remotely as bad as some of the truly terrible games that released this year.

Then again, this thread is specifically about games you purchased, and I realize I purchase a lot more than the average person...

It's essentially because I spent probably 100 hours playing and re-playing the first two in the series with the promise that I'd have half a dozen distinct saves and get radically different endings for each one.

Then I got ME3 and all of those hours got completely invalidated. No game has ever wasted that much of my time. And I don't mean wasted in the general sense, I mean wasted in terms of the game itself. It was like playing a soccer tournament only for the clock to stop in the last minute of the Championship, all team records cleared, and every team that made the playoffs getting to shoot penalty kicks to decide the winner. In short, it's the only game I've ever played that's taken 100 hours of effort and completely invalidated it.

Completely understandable.

Diablo 3.

I laugh at people who bought this game. It was apparent literally MONTHS before release that Diablo 3 would use abysmal DRM. You could see the warning signs from a mile away. You had ample time to do your homework. I don't see how anyone could have thought this would be a worthy successor to Diablo 2, with Activision now playing a part in it. I have no sympathy for you whatsoever.

I'm not an anti-DRM guy either; I'm a pretty big Steamfag. But requiring always-online DRM that adds lag to a singleplayer game? lol.

Call of Duty Black Ops 2 (was gifted)

Game is horrible. I'm not a fan or a real hater of the CoD series (last I played was my friends PS3 copy of MW2 for a few weeks, I prestiged twice). I first tried single player, like 30 mins in I just couldn't take it anymore, it was boring as fuck and not once did I even care to see what was happening. The multiplayer, good lord, is this seriously what is considered "fun" nowadays to most? I couldn't count the number of dies either I died or I killed an enemy and one of us respawned like 15 yards behind the other. the maps are pathetically small, you can toss a grenade over half way across most of them from your initial spawn. It is a shame, because the gun play itself felt ok and such, but the tiny maps and horrible spawning just killed it for me, I tried for like 4 hours to give it an honest chance. Zombie mode is pretty cool. I haven't played it much but I did like it.

Diablo 3 (was gifted this as well)

This is a weird one. I "kinda" enjoyed it at times, but most of the time I was playing it just because it was Diablo and I wanted to see where it was going. I got up to 50 on my Demon Hunter and hit inferno and just didn't give a fuck. The loot was beyond horrible, I found if I didn't use the AH to get better gear as I played that most of my gear was constantly 10+ levels behind my level. It is a shame because you can tell there is the framework for what could be a good game under it all that was covered up by bad decisions.

Need for Speed Most Wanted (I bought this)

I am a huge fan of the original NFS MW and thought this one was pretty much a remake with some new odds and ends. I could not have been any more wrong. This game has nothing to do with the original, the only thing in common is fancy cars, cop chases, and a most wanted list. There is literally no story in the remake, you start the game and are just told hey there is a list of the top ten most wanted drivers, go beat them, that is it, no fluff or anything that is really it. The game was basically Burnout Paradise with tweaks, and they couldn't even get that right it seems as most BO fans didn't like this remake either. There is very very limited tuning/customization of your cars. Each car has 6 races and when you win each race you unlock upgrades, once all 6 races are won that is it. The only cars you win in the game are the most wanted ones when you beat them and take them down, otherwise you just find cars parked around the world that you find and that is how you unlock them. You can change the limited amount of upgrades on your car at anytime, and I do mean anytime. In the middle of a race and cops join in? You can switch to your anti deflate tires so you don't have to worry about spike strips anymore. The cop chases, one of the most fun aspects of the original are boring as hell in this one, there is no penalty for getting busted by the cops, you simply respawn where your car is found and you don't get any of the points you accumulated while trying to get away from the cops. Until you get a higher end car getting rid of the cops is also a pain in the ass too, but it doesn't matter it is more often then not in your best interest just to get busted to avoid it all in the first place since there is no penalty. Fuck you EA and Fuck you Criterion

Sins of a Solar Empire : Rebellion
I thought from the pictures and description that I was buying a nice long space campaign where you had constant close up of ships and good graphics. But instead I got a game with apparently no campaign (at least none I could find), instead you only seem that you pre-configure a map and play here... where the ships are about an inch long on the screen.

I'm sure people who enjoy this type will love it- but it was as far from what I expected as possible.

Metro 2033
I expected an FPS but instead I got a long drawn out story where I'm lucky to play 5 minutes without it going into story mode. I also found it very unrealistic that it takes about 20 shotgun blasts to kill a friggin monkey.

Again, I'm sure some people absolutely love it but it wasn't my cup of tea.

Diablo 3
Wasn't sure what to put as 3rd but even though I've played it a lot, it's really a terrible game. Thankfully I've made hundreds from the RMAH (without cheating might I add) that more than makes up for it.

Scroll your mouse wheel and you are zoomed inside of the battle. A 3 star system can take a week to play. I agree that a campaign would be nice but the time-sink of the skirmishes are fine in my opinion. You can create your own maps, the game has a built-in map creator. I think you only spent like 20 minutes with this game and it takes at least an hour to get through the tutorials.

I knew all of this and still bought it at full price because Blizzard's reputation and I liked Starcraft 2 a lot...got burned :\

Need for Speed Most Wanted was pretty terrible as well.

Call of Duty Black Ops 2 (was gifted)

Funny, I picked up a physical copy of Blops II just a few days ago for (relatively) cheap, and it surprised me. Like I'm actually kinda impressed. CoD is an easy target to make fun of, but at the same time I enjoy playing online every now and then, which is why I bought MW3 last year.

Now I picked up Blops II and the difference in quality is pretty huge. The presentation, the polish, and just about everything else is better than MW3. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing innovative here (same old run 'n' gun CoD gameplay), but it just feels like the developers actually gave a shit this time. It just reinforces my opinion that Treyarch is a way better studio than Infinity Ward.

This is coming from someone who was just playing MW3 immediately beforehand though... and that game is arguably pretty awful in a lot of ways. If you hate Blops II, then don't touch MW3 with a barge pole.

But yeah, different strokes for different folks, etc

farm simulator 10 mins in of driving a slow ass tractor got old.

Diablo 3 I had a love hate relationship with D3 but in the end it became the most hated game ever.

Rollercoaster Tycoon 4 that is not what I remember that game being.

Well, for me, the "worst" is definitely Mass Effect 3.

It's not the "worst" in terms of everything in the game being worst of the whole year's worth of my own gaming time. It's the "worst" because ultimately it's the most disappointing. It's not only the most disappointing of 2012 but, for me, the most disappointing game of the past couple of years, on so many levels.

There are some aspects of the game I liked, to some degree, such as the combat system (only because it actually fits the shooter that ME3 actually is, rather than being a necessary combat system as is) and the "new" Alliance Normandy itself (never really liked Cerberus' SR-2 in ME2, never felt "comfortable", nor "mine"). I also liked some missions, such as the Genophage/Tuchanka arc, or the Geth Vs. Quarians/Rannoch arc, along with the Grissom Academy mission (nice changes for Jack, a bit grown up, more mature and responsible, finding purpose in training biotic students and giving them purpose too, I liked that). Additionally I did appreciate some of the short "cameos" such as the obvious Conrad Verner, or the guy from the ME2's Overlord DLC (at Grissom Academy I think it was). And I kinda liked the overall Normandy crew's banter between each others prior or after most missions (although I didn't like the fact that most of the time it was just Kasumi and Zaeed ME2 DLC click-on-character-for-some-preset-dialog style conversations that weren't meant for wheel-style interactions and investigations in character's own back stories or current status discussions).

I'll never deny that ME3 has its good (not many) and "decent" moments, but ultimately, to me, it definitely is the "weakest" title developed by BioWare since Jade Empire (I really tried to like Jade Empire but... sorry... can't, but that's another topic). But beyond that and how overall the game not only feels but was obviously rushed out of the door (despite that one delay of a few months, which should have apparently been a year or more instead) the whole ending mess (Extended Cut or not, doesn't matter either way) was the nail on the coffin. But regardless of the campaign and because the combat system alone is definitely the only really good aspect of the game I managed to "get into" and over time actually liked its multi-player aspect more and more. Which, to me, is the proof that ME3 was taken on the wrong "shooty" path, since despite the fact that I do like ME3's MP I ironically believe that it doesn't have its place within a franchise like Mass Effect, which should have remained purely single-player and story-driven (and that's regardless of the supposed fact that they had two separate teams during development so that both would focus on their respective MP/SP aspects of the development process).

Also, what doesn't "help" me come up with other "worst of 2012" choices is simply because ultimately last year I only bought five games total, the rest of which I own happen to be Free-to-Play or Humble Bundle style or gifted Indie games (and out of the five games I actually bought two of them are old school games from GoG.com). The only "big name" games I bought last year were Mass Effect 3, Diablo III and Guild Wars 2. And, yes, even though I don't play Diablo III much lately I actually enjoyed it enough to let it pass my own 2012 Ban Hammer judgement only to focus my wrath towards ME3, which really deserves it. Also because DIII doesn't take itself that seriously, it's just a grind and click fest just as much as D2 was, and I enjoyed D2 for nearly seven years of my life, so I wouldn't want to be to inconsistent to that level and just blindly claim that I "hated" DIII "just because". I do really dislike the whole RMAH idea but overall I can ignore it and just play on my own. Even if after a while it gets boring, but so was D2 getting boring after a while, which itself doesn't make a game bad anyway, it's normal to get bored "after a while" on many things in life but you still enjoy them when you do take some moderated time to play them for the heck of it.

So... yep, ME3 it is for me.
