This has probably been done before, but not for awhile. And as with most things, lists and preferences change.

My Top 3.

1. R.E.M.
2. Radiohead
3. Dave Matthews Band

I know a lot of you are going to wonder about Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but I was about 1-2 years too young to really get those guys at the time. And looking back, I still enjoy my top 3 more.

3, in no particular order...

Green Day
Smashing Pumpkins
Radiohead

(nirvana probably would've made it too but i didn't catch on with the whole grunge/alternative scene much)

and as much as i like linkin park, they're not number 4 of kroq's top 106.7 bands of all time

1. Nirvana
2. Green Day
3. Offspring

err 4. REM

props to the pumpkins and metallica's black album.

Not necessarily MY favorites, but I think the 3 with the biggest impact on the direction of music were:

1) Nirvana
2) Green Day
3) Matchbox 20 (laugh if you want, but a TON of bands have that middle of the road late 90s sound now even if they weren't the creators of it; they just happened to be the biggest)

That's just bands. You'd HAVE to add somebody from the Rap world into the mix though given how prevalent rap and hip hop have become in the last 10 years. There will ALWAYS be a new pop generation every 5 or 6 years.

My personal favorites of the 90s:

1) Weezer
2) Green Day (used to hate them because they were CONSTANTLY on. Now I enjoy them more)
3) Dave Matthews

Chili Peppers is the only one i can definitely put on that list.. get back to you when i verify the next two...
