Nice to see Baldur's Gate at #4 but could remove sid meyers pirates and added dungeon keeper.

They had some good choices, but the list seems to be going for the top 25 games to have an impact upon the gaming world upon their release. And even then, Secret of Monkey Island or Maniac Mansion should have been picked over Grim Fandango.
And the original C&C was good for its time, but is in no way good today.

Hm, that's a hard sell, both great games.

Good to see Crysis on the list. It really is fantastic. People like to block out this game by putting an artificial wall between them and this game with unfounded regurgitated opinions.

I played Crysis through to the end, and it has no place on that list.

I would dissagre. All the games i played that are on that list have absorbed a large portion of my life, crysis is the only game that i didn't spend too much time playing. Don't know. I enjoyed playing it, but it got old towards the end.

Right, with the "me too" mentality of aligned opinions for the game it's easy to see why you have that view. Me, I can can see why it's on that list.

Why, pray tell, is it on the list?

It can be summed up with one word. Immersion. People only think of the game for it's graphics. It's not just it's graphics. It's the also open-endedness, the physics, the setting, and the ability to wrap all of this around a cohesive and unique (yes, unique) story. The games technical abilities are what enables the player to immerse themselves in the setting and story.

How about adding Bioshock and Final Fantasy VII on there?

I think, despite the OP omitting to say so in the title, that it appears to be a "Top 25 PC Games" list. Considering it was posted in the PC Forum, and the article is in the PC section of IGN.

:p

Both Bioshock and FF7 came out for the PC as well

I agree with this. I could only run it on average settings, and I didn't care one bit. The game wasn't about the graphics for me. I loved FarCry, so I figured I'd enjoy Crysis, and I really did. The last half of the game is way epic.

True but they were ports to it so it was more of a console game and doesn't count.

I am surprised not to see Operation Flashpoint on there. The game was genre defining and a brilliant game in its own right.

I wouldn't consider Bioshock a port. It was released simultaneously on the PC. Pirates was on the original Xbox, Call of Duty was a simultaneous release, and most of the others are too old to have had console releases.

Final Fantasy VII was a console game that had a shoddy PC port much later.

BioShock is a "consolized" game that happened to have a simultaneous release on the PC. I would reckon that more people would recognize it as an XBOX 360 game and not even realize it came out at the same time on the PC. :p

See my other post.

Specifically, Call of Duty was very consolized. Think it should be omitted too?

Yes.*

If this is really a "Top 25 PC Games" list, how can you put a game on there that had a simultaneous release on a console and sold more copies on the consoles? At that point, it's a multiplatform game, probably more of a console game...not a PC exclusive game.

I mean, are you going to say that Street Fighter IV is one of the best PC games of all time? Even though it came out on the consoles and had a PC port? Might as well just fill up the list with the greatest console games that happened to have some sort of PC port.

*Depending on which "Call of Duty" you're talking about. Most people recognize CoD4, for example, as a console game, despite being released on the PC as well. The sales data also attests to this. :p

It was viewed as a pc heavy game at the time and why it counts there more then console unlike the ones you listed.

Personal opinion (as valid as anyone else's of course) was that Bioshock sucked ... I didn't enjoy it ... FF7 belongs on a PS Top Games list but not PC

some of those games (crysis, cod) are not timeless games. doom, tie fighter, UT were pioneers for their time

some surprising missing games

No Quake is a bit strange. That was just as popular as Doom.

No Ultima games. They were THE rpg's of the 90s.

Crysis is good, but come on. The Top 25. No way.
