I still play a lot of older games myself as well, but is this due to nostalgia or because the good games of yesteryear are truly as good as the good games of today?Originally posted by: Zenoth
It can be due to nostalgia to some extent, but it doesn't apply to everyone you know. I myself do prefer modern gaming in general, but there are gems of the past that were in advance of their time not in terms of graphics but simply in quality and originality. I still buy some SNES / Genesis and Nintendo 64 games on eBay occasionally, since I still play some of my favorite games from time to time, instead of playing World of Goo I end up starting my SNES and playing TMNT4 or Mega Man X, and instead of playing Peggle I sometimes play Streets of Rage 2 or Beyond Oasis, and instead of playing Crysis I still play Seeds of Evil and Perfect Dark.
I loved Lords of the Realm 2 and played through the campaign again just last week, but a lot of my enjoyment for that game is based on the fond memories I have for it rather than how it would currently compete in the marketplace. There have been tremendous advances in many fields besides graphics - interfaces, screen resolution, sound, AI that give a newer take on the genre (Total War series) massive advantages over a game released in 1996.
Take a good but not great game from today, like Prototype, and release it fifteen years ago and suddenly it's the consensus #1 game of all time. Does X-Com get to be considered a "greater" game just because it was released earlier? It was fantastic for 1994, but why not let it stand on its own merits instead of trying to make flawed comparisons to games from different eras and genres?
