Wow, these are pretty spot-on. I remember TMNT & the Castlevania's being pretty hard at times. Aside from the ridiculous language, that video was pretty good. That horrible death tune in Castlevania...*shudder*. Makes me realize how badly-designed some games were, like Ninja Gaiden.

Although Battletoads was the bomb. We'd spend most of the game killing each other :D He even got the catchphrase right - "I swear I didn't mean to do that!" hahaha. He should include Sega's "Altered Beat" just because it was SO FREAKIN' HARD!!!

Altered Beast was only on Genesis, I believe.

I remember certain stages in Castlevania being god damn hard--the Medusa heads were my bane. I never could get very far.

Ninja Gaiden 1 was very difficult, don't think I got very far there. 2 was pretty difficult, but I managed to finish it over and over.

TMNT--the perma death. very hard. that one jump in the sewer, early on teh game on your way to fight mechaturtle....get past that jump and your gold for a few levels.

Battletoads. Yeah, at least it was still very fun. I assume he mentioned Ghosts & Goblins and Top Gun?

The Guardian Legend. It just seems unfair about midway to the end.

My list...

1. The Guardian Legend
2. TMNT
3. Master Blaster
4. Legend of Zelda: II
5. Back to the Future
6. Ninja Gaiden

That is about all I can think of...

Is Top Gun on that list? I think I was 1 for 8000 on landing attempts.

There were a lot of "hard" games back in the NES era simply because they were so terribly programmed. As a kid you are much more forgiving of just plain bad games. You think they're just hard, but really they just suck.

"UP, UP!!!" *pulls up, misses carrier completely*

Nailed it. And is it just me or were the enemy's missiles uber-heatseeking!?

i wish there was a console equivalent to flappy bird.

it seems games nowadays are just on rails that proceed through a storyline.

ghosts 'n goblins and battletoads were fucking punishing and still are.

I remember beating Ghosts 'n Goblins while staying over at my aunt's house for the day. One of my older cousins asked me how I had the patience to keep continuing after dying for the umpteenth time.

ETA: Nevermind. I just looked it up and I'm thinking of Wizards and Warriors. I knew it had a knight in it.

your statement could have easily applied to GnG either way, painfully un-fun and fell into the 'beat it out of spite' territory for me.

I had the Power Glove and would try to play Guardian Legend with it. Man, it was harder than hell. Good times, though.

Beat all those. They had tough spots, but they weren't impossible. Bayou Billy was the only game I couldn't ever beat without cheating. The other games I had a dousy of a time beating, but finally manged, was Millan's Secret Castle, Immortal, and NARC. Those were horrible to try to beat. Managed somehow though.

For reference, here is someone else's list that has Bayou Billy as the worst in comparison to most of the games mentioned here. Even battle toads.

http://unrealitymag.com/index.php/2009/08/26/the-15-toughest-nes-games-of-all-time/

I have literally beat every NES game I came across. I have still like 200+ NES games sitting in a box. All beat without cheats at one point except Bayou Billy. Couldn't beat that one with game genie cheats. It's that fucking stupid.

I had that kind of patience in the day day, but even so, not with G&G. Not hardly.

Pretty sure I could beat Altered Beast without getting hit. Of course being the only game I had for the Genesis for the first however many months helped me to get very, very good at it.

Ninja Gaiden was annoying but it was really just pattern recognition. You could blister through the entire game if you figured out the right sequence.

i have always preferred games of medium difficulty with only one ending (or only one true ending like with SotN and Streets of Rage 3).

i never understood why so many said DMC3 (non special edition) was hard, because the difficulty was pretty medium to me.

Battletoads was pretty brutal, but atleast it was comical.

Surprised Blaster Master didn't make the list, even with the cheating (pausing the game while damaging boss on... even numbered levels continuously did damage) I couldn't beat the game, it was so damn long.

Nah I was no where near as good at Shinobi. My buddy was awesome on the arcade version though, he could beat it on one quarter and complete all of the bonus stages too, so he would have a tonne of lives leftover. That was a cool game.
