Id go with NIN cause of Reznor and only because he actually remixed Puff Daddy's Victory.

I consider myself a passionate fan of Tool, and I enjoy learning about their song meanings and the like, but that dude with the idea about the rearranged track orders and the spiral is just dumb.

Wow thats a tough one...i've listened to them both in the last 24 hours just on random playlists...i would have to say NIN is more talented musically, and Tool has better lyrics...but if we throw A perfect circle into the mix....best of both worlds IMO.

youre friend is correct on one part. their music is very easy to play. but the do have talent and are far better than most bands today. again this is just whatever anyone prefers. often non musicians listen to music differently and rarely put it under the same microscope.

trent, imo is the father of industrial. his early stuff is great. between the two artists you cant compare them. again, its all up to the listener to like or dislike either of the two.

Your friend is somewhat correct insofar as Adam is nothing special as a guitarist. The guitar parts to Tool's songs are relatively simple. The real genius of Tool comes about with their arrangements, and that's largely Danny's and Maynard's doing.

Still, a guitar part doesn't have to be technically challenging to be a "good" part.

Comparing Tool and NIN is kind of difficult, given that Tool is very abstract, while NIN is more boom boom boom boom boom boom and so on. NIN could be more easily compared to the likes of Covenant and Wumpscut, while Tool would be more at home with early Zao and Mudvayne.

I agree

Also,
The new NIN album is so much different than their older albums. I absolutely love their new album (With Teeth).

Maybe so for their bassist and guitar player, but Danny Carey is an incredible drummer.

After having gone to a Tool concert, I can't see any band even comparing to them in talent. The sound they produce is just phenomenal.

Yeah, it frustrates me because I can play the guitar parts but my drummer can't hardly TOUCH Danny's drumming.

Yeah, like so many other bands, their old stuff was their best stuff :(

I agree w/ you two, iamaelephant and Canai. Tools drummer is great. Alot of bands seem to lose their fire from album to album. I havent liked much of anything from Trent since Downward Spiral.

They are both pretty decent, IMO. But NiN's latest left me feeling rather "Meh."

But Tool's videos >> NIN's

Both Maynard and Reznor have their strengths. Personally, I think NIN has evolved somewhat more over the years, and the ability to grow your music tells a lot about your talent level. I think tool has matured far less in their sound since their inception - even the move to APC didn't change the feel of the music much, in my opinion.

I'll also echo the feeling that their earlier works, in both cases, were better days.

Well, Reznor paved the way for Tool, so you gotta give respect to the man who started the whole "Industrial Metal/Rock" movement going "mainstream".

I've always LIKED Tool, but never considered myself a fan. My two friends go to a lot of concerts and said Tool is one of the best live shows they've ever seen.

I did start reading up on Maynard a little, and I'm beginning to appreciate his views more, so maybe I'm becoming a fan by accident.

BTW, Reznor helped me through my "LSD experimental days", so I must give a nod to Trent ;)

It seems to me that Tool has evolved a LOT since their early days. There is definitely a strong transition between each of Tool's albums, both musically and lyrically (especially since the Opiate and Undertow days).

10,000 Days

I didn't know if you people knew this. But, If you burn both Viginti Tres followed by Wings for

I still think NIN tops Tool.

I tried this, but i couldnt get the tracks to line up perfectly.

Theres something to it, but it just sounded like a mess to me.
