I'm not talking about people who just like Tool, they're cool. But there are a wide variety of people that worship the band as a small musical God.

What makes this band so great, so "poetic", so brilliant, so everything else?

Personally I don't like Tool, but I am willing to listen to what is to be said about them. I have had some friends outright get pissed that I didn't think Tool was God, and I couldn't understand why. I have listened to their songs, I bought two of their cds to listen to ($1 each at used cd store) and there is only one song that I remotely liked/could understand (parabola). I guess my main problem with Tool are the lack of quality vocals. Reminds me of the band Thursday, faking emotion in every step and taking it too far.

what 2 CDs did you get?

you shoudl listen to "Aenima" and "Lateralus" best 2 albums IMO, if thopes are the 2 you got for 1$ im sorry you didnt like them, everyone has different tastes in music, i most likely hate something you like

I like tool but i do not worship them, IMO its good hard rock, good lyrics and great sound, its not the same crap that you constantly hear out there

What Anubis said, his lyrics are very good, especially in those two albums. Opiate is a good one as well.

Those were the two I got actually :/ I sold them to a friend for $1 each just like I paid, worthless in my collection. Good hardrock/metal belongs to Mushroomhead.

"Hooker with a penis" isn't very lyrically poetic imho...

Sorry but Mushroomhead is terrible.

Then again, it's my opinion. You probably just have different (bad) taste 😛

then you didn't read/comprehend the lyrics. tool's greatness comes from the fact that they combine complex intricate time signatures with amazing music and good writing.

They did suck ass live :/ I'll let you have that 😛 But also, I just listen to Mushroomhead, and not even that often it was only a while-typing decision that I chose them instead of another band. IMHO Mushroomhead is much better then their followers (Slipknot for example). MH's XX album shows that they have great vocal quality and almost melodic at times.

Yeah, but they did suck live. Probably a good reason the band's never hit it big.

Ding ding ding. Danney Carey is just a filthy drummer all together. Plus Maynard writes great lyrics and his voice is just flat out great. And, as CR said, the music is just well written.

Some of its ok. Some of its just too...'weird'...like if I wanted to sit down and analyze a song it would be good, but I generally just want to listen to my music.

Here is one reason I like Tool (no I don't worship them, just like). Listen to the song Lateralus, count the number of syllables in each line.

Black (1)
then (1)
white are (2)
all I see (3)
in my infancy (5)
red and yellow then came to be (8)
reaching out to me (5)
lets me see (3)

As below so above and beyond I imagine (13)
drawn beyond the lines of reason (8)
push the envelope (5)
watch it bend (3)

Those are fibbonacci numbers, and I am a math geek, so that kicks ass to me.

*EDIT* oh yeah, and danny freaking rocks, ESPECIALLY live, he is amazing

It depends on what type of music you like. If you listen to Tool and don't like them no amount of people telling you why you should like them is going to change your mind. I don't really car for Dylan<sp?>, The Beatles, or Ray Charles but I don't think they suck. I don't discount their contributions to music. They just aren't my cup o' tea.

Personally, I'm a sucker for good, inventive drumming and that's one reason I like Tool so much. Also, if you deconstruct their music it is very different than almost everything out there. The arragements and layering of the instruments is unique. They use stereo fields more than most. Vocals, drums, bass, and guitar can all deftly shift from here to there to there in the same song. Sometimes the guitar is front and center. Other times it is back and left. And still other times it is everywhere laying down a broad texture juxtapositioned against whatever has the "lead" at that point in time (the same can be said for bass, drums, and vocals). There is also a good use of FX while not going FX happy. Personally my favorite albums are Lateralus and Aenima because they are a bit more art/experimental than Opiate and Undertow. If you start w/Opiate and listen to all their albums it's interesting to see how the band has changed. It all sounds like Tool, but each album definetly has it's own, unique identity.

Every once in awhile, I love to just turn on some Tool. It isn't dancing music, you can't really rock out to it, but I guess it just compliments other things great, like reading, driving and games.

I hate Tool's popular songs.. maybe because they are overplayed. I don't care for the singer but the music in the lesser known songs can be really good.

well, you see it's like this. they play music. then some people listen to it. then some of those people enjoy the listening experience.

Did you see the thing about rearranging the song order to form mathmatical spirals ? If you haven't there are two different versions of the order, both are extremely eerie. If you need help finding where to purchase it PM me 😛

So, you don't like Tool. Good for you.

I don't like the alot of bands people think are #1. Like what you want to like, and leave everyone else alone.

i guess you didn't notice that this thread has some interesting information, thread crap of the year nominee. Anyway, I think tool has some interesting songs, i don't have any of their cds though. I really liked thursday's first cd, but thought their newer one was not nearly as good.
