Here is one reason I like Tool (no I don't worship them, just like). Listen to the song Lateralus, count the number of syllables in each line.

Black (1)
then (1)
white are (2)
all I see (3)
in my infancy (5)
red and yellow then came to be (8)
reaching out to me (5)
lets me see (3)

As below so above and beyond I imagine (13)
drawn beyond the lines of reason (8)
push the envelope (5)
watch it bend (3)

Those are fibbonacci numbers, and I am a math geek, so that kicks ass to me.

*EDIT* oh yeah, and danny freaking rocks, ESPECIALLY live, he is amazing

Smithers

Did you see the thing about rearranging the song order to form mathmatical spirals ? If you haven't there are two different versions of the order, both are extremely eerie. If you need help finding where to purchase it PM me 😛
There was a post about this here. Wonder if it's still archived.

So, you don't like Tool. Good for you.

I don't like the alot of bands people think are #1. Like what you want to like, and leave everyone else alone.

i guess you didn't notice that this thread has some interesting information, thread crap of the year nominee. Anyway, I think tool has some interesting songs, i don't have any of their cds though. I really liked thursday's first cd, but thought their newer one was not nearly as good.

Eh, I was just saying that every band will have people that like them, for different reasons, so what is the big deal? What interesting information in this thread would change my point of view on this?

I bought two of their cds to listen to ($1 each at used cd store) and there is only one song that I remotely liked/could understand (parabola). I guess my main problem with Tool are the lack of quality vocals. Reminds me of the band Thursday, faking emotion in every step and taking it too far.

If parabola was the only song you could understand, then you don't have enough musical intelligence to listen to tool. parabola was an uncharacteristically straight-forward and simplistic song for them. just like not everyone can listen to Chopin and "get" it (I sure can't, it just sounds like emotionless noise to me), not everyone can listen to tool and get it. tool's not rocket science, but if all you listen to is mainstream pop-rock, then they are a bit of a leap. but just cause i don't get chopin doesn't mean i think he sucked or was overrated. he's just over my head. as far as the emotion, tool are a very cold and clinical band, on purpose. they are much more about self-analysis than raw emoting. if you want emotion listen to bjork.

i agree that thursday has been getting kind of insincere-sounding. the last album seemed really canned. but keep in mind that although tool is serious and sincere, they also have their tongues firmly in cheek at all times. they are not above making fun of themselves or their audience.

Just following your lead of impressions being relative... I think Tool is a very emotional bad. Dark, and cold yes, but not cold in a robotic type of way. For example, Dream Theater is a very talented group of musicians, but their recent offerings are very technical and cold (lacking of emotion/soul).

Don't quite understand how you could say they lack quality vocals. Listen to the live version of Pushit (off Salival) sometime. Or Flood.

tool's drummer = :bigthumb:

almost as good as pink floyd's drummer. almost 😉

i like tool because their music is interesting.

What Anubis said, his lyrics are very good, especially in those two albums. Opiate is a good one as well.

"Hooker with a penis" isn't very lyrically poetic imho...

Might not be poetic - but that song is very powerful. Sometimes the sledgehammer is the right tool as that song shows 😉

I just love the song because they lyrics rock - the drum part on that stuck in my heads for weeks.

I hate Tool's popular songs.. maybe because they are overplayed. I don't care for the singer but the music in the lesser known songs can be really good.

over played where? i dont think ive ever heard a Tool song on FM, then again i havent listned to FM in about 4 years,

I hear it on XM every now and then, but no more often then any other song

They've definitely had some songs overplayed to RHCP / Linkin Park / Limp Biscuit levels, to the point of it truly (and negatively) influencing my opinion of Lateralus 🙁 Aenima got played somewhat often, but not to that extent. I don't listen to the radio anymore.

I think Tool is phenomenally talented, but I don't worship them. I think the worship generally comes from the fact that other current bands are mostly sh*t. The contrast makes them more visible, and people who need something to latch onto will do so.
