I went to pick my son up from his friends and took my lappy with me just to see if I could find anyone with wireless and see if it was open-unsecured. I failed to believe that people would be so stupid as to leave thier wi fi open. Well it is a little over a 1/2 mile and there is 10 houses along the way. I came across 6 wi-fi's and only 1 had any type of security turned on. I even stopped for about 30 seconds and was able to access the internet from one.

Now all I have is a HP Pavilion ze 5375 with a built in wi-fi card and Windows XP wireless auto config software. I am not running any wi-fi finder or encryption breaking software. How is it that people can be so blind? If I am not mistaken, can I not have access to their pc given a few minutes hooked into their wi-fi? All them did not even change the broadcast name which probably means they did not change the password either

For those who will ask, yes I have all my security features on. WPA on SSID off MAC addy authorization .

Damn, just a few months ago I had about 12 unsecured wi-fi points available to me. Nowadays, I am happy to see one unsecured point. I guess word is getting around about setting up security...

1. Its "have", not hae :p
2. Even with all that on, someone determined enough will crack your WiFi security. Lucky for me, I'm probably the only person within a 5 mile radius that even knows what WPA or WEP are, let alone how to use them (found this out wardriving, out of the 20 or so WAPs I picked up, 2 had security, one was mine), so I've got nothing to worry about unless the feds are after me.

Some people are stupid...and yes, if you know what you're doing and have a few minutes, you can hack computers and printers on their network

It probably doesn't affect you, so just be happy it exists if you need access in an emergency.

Plus, there are reasons to want an open connection.

Encryption

I didn't know there was such an encryption known as WAP. I know of WEP, and WPA, but as far as I know, WAP doesn't exist.

Encryption

WPA*

Not everyone is tech savy you know. Hell, I broke into my neighbor's 64bit WEP encryption and they didn't even change the default password on their router. :rolls; I bet GeekSquad helped them set up their wireless network.

I think you're paranoid. :p If someone is determined enough to break in your wireless network, they'll eventually succeed. Turning off SSID, enabling MAC filtering just complicates things when you need to add a new device to your network. WPA is all I use. If my neighbors manage to break in my wireless network, they won't be able to see my main computers initially since they're on a different subnet. Also, enabling SSID broadcast can be pretty funny sometimes. Say your neighbor is named Mike, you can broadcast your SSID to "mike_is_gay" or something. :p

You are not kidding...the amount of opened or unprotected wifi networks are insane! I think all people want to do is to get on the internet and either forget about securing their network or just don't care. For neighbors I have even went to their houses and helped them secure their network.

OMFG The spelling police out;)

Any kind of security measure can be broken given the time but why make it easier for those who might try.

And why would the feds be after you ;)

We do this family camping trip each year up in the woods of Minnesota on an island... We were able to find three open WAPs up there.

Warez? I dunno, I just can't think of anyone other than the feds that would be determined enough to crack my WAP open for any reason.

Found another by walking into my backyard, I think it is the neighbors across the canal. Should I tell him or mind my own business
