I'm going to say yes, but only if you know what the hell you're doing, and if your sense of style doesn't change (or you never had one)...

I have 2 suits: my first was a 3 button I got at age 21 or 22. It is a piece of shit that I had a department store salesperson essentially choose for me - I had no effing clue how to dress. My second one is better, but European fit so very thin/skinny pants and a somewhat tight jacket because I bulked up more after I bought it.

I now hate both because I am solid metro, more mature, and know what I want.
 
Berlington Coat Factory has some good suits for not too much money. You can get a pretty decent Sean John one for about $250 there. They run 350-400 at the mens wearhouse.

I have a tailor that flies into NYC from Thailand about once or twice a year. He takes your order and your measurements and ships to you in a couple of months. Can't beat the quality. Suits can run about $4-500, shirts $70-80 on average depending on which materials you choose.

D & G and Gucci are nice assuming you are trim. They look good, quality isn't the greatest.

I have seen some of those custom low-end suits. They look good next to a $100-200 suit, but next to something high end the only thing they offer is a better 'fit' and that is easily fixed in the higher end suit by having custom tailoring done.
 
Meh, a decent quality suit that fits great looks better than a top-tier one that doesn't fit as well.

This. I walked in to a Men's Warehouse at 10:00 AM for a suit, and made the wedding that started at 2 PM that day; including a 45 minute drive. This was on a Sunday, they called the tailor at home and told him to come in. Very happy with them.

There are many events between black/white tie (IE Tuxedo) and less formal events that allow for navy/dark gray.
Being dressed appropriately is very important. People judge you (fairly/unfairly) on how you dress at social events.
