Lazard employees got canned 2 weeks before bonus.

I can picture it now...
Manager hands me an envelope and says, "Here is your bonus"

I open it and find a pink slip.

depends on how well your company did last year (for some)

our bonuses were similar to last year with no raises (not in the financial industry)

Oh, right, you're in financial services. I mean ($10,000).

No, he works in financial services.

You mean +$1,000,000. Gotta spend that bailout money somehow.

Not true, High Sea salt is rather tasty

Do you get called in to the boss's office and handed a slip? We get called in about a week before pay day in April.

I'm not directing this at the OP...

Does anyone else think it's pretty messed up when people think they are entitled to a bonus regardless of company performance? I'm in the auto industry and this industry is shit right now yet for some people are still hoping for a bonus. What the hell? My bonus is that I'm still working.

Most of the time bonuses are marketed to employees as a reward for that individual doing a good/excellent job. So people focus on the fact that they did a "good job" that year, therefore they deserve a bonus. Of course they forget the caveat that always comes with bonuses... that little line about how company profits affect the amount.

Some people's comp plans have defined bonus in them.
