No I'm not happy, because I don't make enough money. If I made about $3000 more a year I'd break even and then I could be happy. That's why it pisses me off that the wealthy and even the upper middle class act like we're lucky for paying what they consider low taxes. 1.) Take a different job.
2.) Makes sacrifices so you can live on $30,000 a year.
3.) Work more hours at your current job assuming you are allowed.
4.) Retrain yourself so you can get a second job.
5.) Bitch about it and do nothing.

What are you claiming etc? For instance I can tell you right now there were times I was seeing 40%+ of my paycheck vanish and it SUCKED. I was working 90+ hrs a week and watching it vanish. Sure you get 7k in refund afterwards, but I'd rather not have to deal with a refund.

If you're receiving large state and federal income tax refunds each year, you should claim more withholding allowances to reduce the amount of money withheld from each paycheck.

You get a deduction for your mortgage interest paid. If you're paying 15,000 in interest each year (equates to a mortgage of about 350,000), that's a federal tax savings of about $3750 each year (assuming your marginal tax rate is 25%)..

The health care premiums paid by your employer aren't taxable. For a couple without children, your employer is probably shelling out at least $10,000 in premiums. So you're saving another $2500 in taxes.

And YOUR contribution to health care premiums is paid with pre-tax dollars. That's probably about $2000 for a couple, so you're saving yet another $500.

All told, that's about $6750 in federal tax savings due to loopholes. And I haven't yet counted the amount you save on your state income tax because of these loopholes, which would put you at well over $7,000 saved because of these loopholes.

Most I made in my life was 43k a year, and had stay at home wife, and two kids, and a mortgage, car payment... Made it just fine.

Granted, I wasn't in an expensive town. Mortgage amounted to $800 a month.

Sometimes I wish I had never left that job and moved to another state hoping the grass would be greener.

1) I've been applying for jobs for about 7 months.

2) There's nothing to sacrifice. I moved to the other side of the island to pay cheaper rent ($850), I don't have a phone payment, I don't have a car payment... Just utilities, gas, food, and interest on student loans and credit cards. Try living in Hawaii on $2080/month.

3) I can't work more hours unless there's some kind of emergency that requires extra work like a hurricane or tsunami.

4) How would I retrain myself? I bought an AutoCAD for Dummies book and started learning it, but my trial ran out. Even if I did teach myself CAD, employers want real training and usually experience.
I have a second job doing GIS for a surveying company, but it's been 2 months and I've gotten zero work. The last I heard, they got a Navy contract, but I haven't gotten any work except giving them input on the project before bidding. Because of the scope of another project they were bidding on, I told them they needed a GIS analyst, so they hired some guy on the mainland to work remotely. Well, they never got that contract, but they still have that guy so they may be giving him all the work I'd have gotten. Guess that's what I get for doing the right thing.

Gaming losses are only used to offset reported gaming income.

One also must itemize (1040/Schedule A) to deduct losses.

When Joe Sixpack hits the lottery for $2K, he will not be able to offset the tax on those winnings due to not having enough to use the Schedule A
