GIBSON: let me ask you, too, about two other things that you have said. subsequent to that. 1985, you said to ""the washington post,"" it is such a personal thing i did no want to throw my medals away. then 1996, you said to the ""boston globe,"" i didn't bring my own medals to throw because i didn't have time to go home and get them. which one was it?

Which is it? Both, of course. I "did not want to throw my medals away because it is such a perspnal thing," and, besides, I would have to drive home to get them and there wasn't time, but if there was time to drive home, I would have, but I would not have thrown my medals away...I would have fixed a sandwich. So you see, I can have my sandwich and eat it, too."

Who cares? It's not an issue. It's just smear tactics.

Whatever. Kerry blatantly lies. Even over trivial stuff. Yes all politicians lie, including Bush, but Kerry's mouth is his undoing.

And quit saying smear tactics, or how the republicans are attacking Kerry. The DNC is just as guilty of attacking Bush as the republicans are at attacking Kerry.

so you'll quibble over medals a man earned, and ignore the fact that during this time bush used his fathers power to avoid war and have another man drafted in his stead?

The issue really isn't the earning of medals in this case. It's about him lying/obfuscating/nuancing his statements about it over the years. He has NOT been consistant with them unless you really believe that "medals" and "Ribbons" were being used interchangably - which is laughable considering he has differentiated between them in the past.

Meh - I think kerry is going to lose this issue if he doesn't get a handle on it quick like. His attempt at damage control failed miserably this morning.

I still would like to know where exactly kerry slept the night before they threw their "symbols" over the fence.

in the end it all comes down to this, your quibbling about what a man did with medals he earned. he earned the right to say or do whatever he wanted to with medals after dodging bullets when his country called him to service. and you spend your time in denial trying to distract yourself from the fact that you defend a man who spent his time dodging the draft.

I was talking to a Vietnam vet today(who isn't a Bush supporter) who said that kerry has no business running on his vietnam duty since he threw away the "symbols" of his service. He also stated that on that issue alone would be enough for him to NOT vote kerry. I don't know who he plans on voting for since he isn't a Republican and isn't a Bush supporter but he stated in no uncertain terms that kerry was NOT getting his vote.
Anecdotal? Sure, but there are many more who are just like the man I spoke with about this. And the funny thing is - I didn't even bring it up:p The news was on and he made some comment about "that SOB turncoat" and I asked him what he was talking about since I didn't hear the news report. He said it was about kerry and the medals/ribbons/symbols/whatevers and we had a nice long discussion about vietnam and kerry.

So to some it does come down to what you THINK it is about but to others like me, it's about the fact he couldn't be straight forward about it and has failed miserably in his attempts to nuance it.
I'm glad kerry served the country, but he has to be honest about what he did after his service too.

Meh - if he want to try to spin medals into ribbons - so be it, but like I said if he doesn't get a handle on it - he's going to lose this issue.

and like it or not, keeping to your standards that makes a quibble about medals and ribbons that he EARNED under fire, you have no logical reason to support bush who weaseled his neck to safety in far more immoral ways. its just that you cannot afford to admit your man is clearly of inferior character by your own standards.
