I would highly recommend you going to a FEW local gunshops, perferable ones with indoor ranges and testing the guns aforementioned. You will never know untill you shoot them if you like them or not. Its a waste to spend the money on it and not like the gun. However I think you would like any of the guns mentioned, they are all great guns, jut each one fits into a little different catagory than the other.

A friend of mine has a Glock 22 (.40), and it's a nice gun..recoil is lighter than I expected. I may be buying a Sig P228 (.40) this year, depending on finances..

What pistols did you have/shoot before? Polymer framed pistols aren't that bad to get use to, I have a SA-XD in 9mm (Here's an "artsy" pic of mine). I know it's not a DA but I highly recommend them. The XD's are on the same playing field as the Glocks in many aspects. XDs are also easier on the wallet than Glocks.

If you must have a DA I would suggest a Ruger P89. I have one I bought from a police officer years ago and I love it just as much as my XD. I've been looking at getting a P345 for awhile, if you're looking for something in .45 I would suggest that.

Yeah, I've only used bolt action hunting rifles up to the .338 Winchester Magnum, and 12 gauge pump action shotgun.

So, obviously a total newbie to the world of handguns 😱

depends on how well you can handle the recoil. for me, i am waaaay less accurate w/a .40 than a 9mm at 25ft.

of course if the the perp is 7 ft from me, it doesnt matter 🙂
 
Sig's are VERY nice guns, all of them. I think the P229 is just slightly smaller than the P226. Sig's are accurate as hell right out of the box. I own a Glock .40 now, and I am getting a Sig in the near future. the P229 is the same price as the P226 in the stores down here.

you might be right... i am not an expert or anything even close. it was the first gun i ever fired. I carried the Glock 27 every day, but found the Baretta to nice, accurate, comfortable firearm. I liked it. I liked the SIG, too but it was way too pricey for me on the budget I had at the time.

Different ppl and different hand sizes and different budgets will recommend different things.

I have had both Sig's & Glock's and I like the way a Glock sets lower in my hand. It
feels closer to the center support when you shoot, although the Sig is an good
firearm, just sits kind of tall in my hand if you know what I mean.
 
Sig and H&K are the choice of professionals. I've got half a dozen Sigs. Best guns in the world, IMO. I have a couple Kimber's now, but while they shoot great, and they're pretty, they just don't inspire the confidence in me that my SIGs do. I could dunk my 228 in water and throw it against a wall as hard as I could, and it would still work when I needed it. I've put 20,000 rounds through it, and I've had one misfire. Due to a shell with no powder in it. That's reliability. That's what will save your life.

the 92f is the civilian version of the standard army issue side arm. it's too big to carry as a concealed, imo.
 
Good grief... I don't know one gun enthusiast that would recomend a Ruger Auto. Not one... They make good wheel guns, but the autos are crap. Total crap.
