To all you "new guys" out there...

Everyone who is already dedicated to a project. Move on. I wouldn't want to suggest that anyone move.

For those who aren't yet committed - this is for you.

Be # 701,342 in chasing aliens - or finding the best cheese recipe, or whatever -
or be a PLAYER in DPAD.

We're fighting against ENORMOUS odds - and gaining ground - in the true AnandTech fashion.
We're about to move up to 5th place world-wide, and we're moving beyond that.

Be a small cog in a large wheel - (we'll defend to the death your right to do that)
or...

be a MAJOR part of a TeAm that's going somewhere fast. Your choice-- no pressure.
If you're "on the fence" - We've got a logical choice for you. 🙂

Cheers.

OH... and btw.... DPAD has the best chicks - the best beer, and the best parties!

You have never been to the hot beer and cold babes partys over at SETI, have you?
😕

Dude... I ran SETI for over a year-and-a-half.

I hated every minute of it --- but I did it to repay my friends for RC-5 cycles.

Need I say more? 😉

I have no bad feelings about SETI, and am searching for aliens (well, I don't think they'll ever find any, so I'm actually looking for black holes, quasars, or whatever 😉) to help out the TA SETI guys regain our rightful position from BBR. But I also do Folding@Home, and will have a machine or two on DPAD once SETI is over.

Good luck on the recruiting, anyway. 😎

I'm running both - SETI and DPAD. For the four networked (but they only have shared dial-up internet) computers I have setup at work, DPAD is perfect since it has an extremely limited need to transfer data. I can leave them alone for days while they build up completed particle accelerator simulation data, then a quick dial-up session to turn in my work. Elapsed time for three days of work is about 4 minutes online. It used to take 50 to 60 minutes to update three days of SETI units (50 to 60 wu).

I am intrigued by the physics involved in DPAD and by the innovative way that the client combines "randomness" with the ability to update a "best results" file that will influence future random alterations.

The graphic version is very pretty but oh so slooooow. But if anyone asks me about DPAD, it is the graphic display that I pop up for them. Seeing the progression of quantum particles traversing through magnetic focusing rings in a 200 nanosecond simulation seems to impress most watchers. It hasn't picked up any chicks, yet, but hope springs eternal. 🙂

When BOINC starts, I'll change out my remaining SETI. By then, we should already be in at least 4th place, maybe 3rd. Not that I'm competitive.

I agree with DanC ... DPAD is probably one of the few DC projects where even some slow machines can have a deep impact. At least until SETI ends and all those "fleet-owner-guys" invade DPAD 😀

Yeah DPAD is great! Anyone who hasn't tried it, don't know what they're missing...believe me, ur missing a lot!

It's easy to use and it runs in the background...so no interfering with ur games...err I mean work! 😉

Check out the TeAm rankings! and this is how we compare to the other teams!

Hope we get a lot of new TeAmMates!!! 😀

DPAD is a great project! And again, congrats to DanC and his exceptional recruiting talents. Dan, no one can motivate like you!!! Just wait 'till SETI1 is over and see DPAD rocket to the top of the stats!!!

I was just kidding there Dan. 🙂

with DPAD do you have to have an always on internet connection or can you just upload like once a week and cache data for long periods of time?

No you can set it to upload when you want as long as you have 10k of results to return

DPAD results can even be sneaker-netted if necessary. There are a bunch of 3rd party tools that work really great!

One other thing that's uber-cool about DPAD is evidenced by JonB's achievement yesterday. He had TOP CLIMB in Team, TOP PRODUCER in Team and TOP MUON PERCENTAGE - all in one day. Jon is presently 26th on the team in total production... yet he was able to CLOBBER us all.

There are very few (if any) other projects where that's possible, since most are only measured by total output. It gives the "little guy" a chance to excel on a level playing-field. 🙂

i just have a lot of friends that are on seti currently that only connect to the net like once a day on dial up or even once a week and ive been looking for a project that will cater to them as well as be for a good cause. thank you for the info!

Chalk up another member for the team. I was doing RC5 72 but was looking for something different. Can someone remind me how to join TA for RC5? I was going solo but I want to give TA the blocks I've produced thus far.

can't help you w/ RC5 as i do not know much about this project...but check out the link in my sig to get "everything" u need going on Dpad 🙂 🙂 🙂

and we are all here to answer ur questions!

I tried throwing DPAD onto a spare box (K6-2 @475) running Windows 2000 and I keep getting an error saying that muon1 has generated errors and will need to be restarted. I've tried redownloading the files, and followed Overkiller's setup instructions, but I keep getting the same error. Any ideas?

is that K6-2 overclocked at all?

The error message usually occurs when it can't properly read/write to results.txt and conversely results.dat

Did you remember to kill the running process before deleting files?

I had this happen when changing versions. It seems I downloaded the wrong version - and when I went to correct the situation - I got that error. The problem was that the muon1 application was basically still running in the background!

After closing (using task manager) deleting the directory, and re-installing - Wala' - the problem vanished. 🙂

Yes, it's overclocked, but ran F@H for 3 weeks without a burp, and could run P95 for 12 hours+ without an error. None ofthe files are read-only, and this is the first time I've run DPAD on any machine. I'll try setting it to stock speeds and see what happens.
