To all bicyclers: you don't own the freakin road

IMO bicyclists should always use the bike lane if there IS one or pull over as close as is SAFE (for the cyclist) to the shoulder. That having been said.

Bicycles ARE vehicles TOO! In fact, did you know that the first paved roads in the US were made for BICYCLES and NOT cars?!

In this day and age, riding a bike is MUCH more dangerous that driving a car and at the same time it is MUCH better for the environment, the rider and the world as a whole.

Drivers should share the road with bikes and if that means you may be a bit put out at times, tough! In fact I think it would be a GREAT idea if ALL drivers HAD to do a bit of cycling just to be forced to see things from another perspective for a change.

Agreed x 1000.

I have been commuting by bike once or twice a week for the past 6 months. I've always been a roadie but have recently started cycling seriously again and for the most part I don't have many run-ins with stupid motorists but occasionally I do. Usually it's stupid crap like some moron stopping his/her car in the bike lane but sometimes a vehicle will pass by me really close. There's really nothing I can do about that though and I don't really think about it when I'm riding...if I did I probably wouldn't ride.

I obey all stop lights and will slow down to almost a complete stop and always yield right of way to a car according to traffic laws. At stop signs where there are no cars I usually do not stop but just slow down and look both ways before proceeding.

When I'm driving I find that I am very conscious of motorcycles and cyclists. I can't remember ever being held up by a cyclist while driving my car.

🙂

shrug - the law says differently.

If you use it and aren't in my way (either when I'm on my bike or in my truck, both of which I pay taxes on so that I can use the road) then I don't care.

Yep, most cyclists don't ever own cars or pay taxes. Stinking freeloader hippies.

hehehe...
honestly anybody who would even think to run someone off the road should get their license suspended.

Yeah, I do.

🙂

I'm either having deja vu, or someone posted almost the exact same complaint.. they were reprimanded by their boss because they were late... they tried to blame a cyclist.

I belive roads are paid for by the taxes we pay on our fuel, not federal income tax.

There have been times in the past when I didn't drive my car for 6 years! I would ride EVERYWHERE. That ended when I got my dog and he went with me where ever I went.

I will probably start riding again very soon. 🙁

So work out the percentage of damage caused by cyclists to the roads vs car/trucks and lobby to have them charged.

Charging $2-3 a year would be more trouble than it is worth.

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME... you wililng to support the continuous bills that bikers try to get passed in legislation?

If bikers got a bike lane or a designated lane for bikers only, I doubt there would be any problems between bikers and car drivers. There would also probably be more people commuting to work.

Well, we have dedicated bike lanes here in SoCal on most roads here and motorists still manage to kill a cyclist or two every year here. They also have a tendancy to do really stupid crap like stop in the bike lane or wander over into it every now and then.

I am in favor of bike lanes though and think they make more sense than riding in the lane with traffic even on roads with very wide lanes.

Some of the closest calls I ever had were people opening car doors when I was forced to ride along side a line of parked cars. Being a cyclist is a constant lesson in vigilance.

Who cares? Honestly, the amount of cycling traffic on the roads probably amounts to nil compared to motor vehicle traffic. Getting your panties in a bunch because cyclists don't pay a road tax is ridiculous. Might as well start taxing people for walking on sidewalks or jogging.

Yeah, let's create a disincentive for people who choose to not clog our roadways or contribute to smog and global warming...

Me too. Riding to work I have to ride past a high school in the morning and every single day a large number of motorists would stop their cars in the bike lane on a 45mph road to let their kids off for school (which is illegal BTW). I was forced repeatedly out into the right lane, which I happily rode down the middle of completely blocking traffic to avoid these idiots. One time as I was coming up to a light an SUV in the middle lane opened the passenger side door and almost took me out. :| I think I created a thread about it a month or so ago.

QFT. I even walk to the grocery store for this very reason. I get looks from people sometimes. We American have gotten so lazy we can't even walk a few blocks to the local store.

Also, it isn't like most road bikers don't pay taxes or own cars. In fact most of the bikers I know are the safest car drivers I know, except for a few of them. It is because they understand the dangers of the road a lot more than silly teenagers or college kids who like to speed because they are stupid and then complain on tech forums about cyclists. In this way cyclist are a lot less of a burden on road costs than any other type of vehicle.

Yeah, I bet they number in the tens or twenties in Arkansas. I see maybe 3 or 4 other cyclists when I ride in to work. I probably see a few hundred cars. You do the math.

My point being that they impede traffic, not that that the sheer number of them fills the road.

You were late to work because of one guy on a bike?

You are a fscking liar.

WTF? Baseless? I see it several times per week. It's not uncommon at all to wind up in a line of cars behind a cyclist. What is there to prove?

As I stated before, my opinion is that cyclists shouldn't be allowed on non-residental roadways that do not have bike lanes. You don't have to agree, but quit being such a dumbass.

LOL. They impeded traffic for about the 30 seconds it takes to pass them, and then you move on. What really impeded traffic is car traffic accidents and stupid drivers.... i.e. - people that have road rage and rant about law abiding cyclist on Tech Forums.

🙂 He is a cutie! I love labrador mixes. They tend to be the most stable mentally and are very loving, adoring pets.

And my point is that they aren't much of an impediment due to the lack of large numbers of cyclists on the roads.

If they are in your area then maybe you and other motorists could get together with cyclists and lobby for the city to put bike lanes on these roads. Either way, you can't argue with the fact that cyclists do have a legal right to use the roads because they do.
