Yes the lifetime service ($199) is for the lifetime of the unit and not for your liftime. So if you buy a new unit you will have to buy a new service contract. Of course Tivo is "upgradeable" relaticely easily so that shouldn't be a problem😉

Has anyone verified that you can use both rebates? It sounds to me like the machine is just printing 2 of the same rebate or something with the 'limit 1 per household' on them. It makes no sense to offer 2 $100 rebates instead of a single $200 rebate. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to get screwed over on this unless I'm missing something.

I'm not real familiar with how Circuit City does rebates, but it sounds as if you are doing the same thing as going into CompUSA, buying something, asking for an extra copy of the receipt (which they'll do), and grabbing 2 rebate forms on the way out.

They have 2 different rebate numbers. If they say 1 per household, which they do, that means you can only submit a particular rebate once. Not a problem. I am submitting each of them, once. Keeps people from buying a product and submitting 20 rebate forms for that one item.

Just got back from the Duncanville Tx store with my nearly FREE tivo, think I got the last one. $324 + monthly charges. Can I quit after 1 or 2 months? Really glad I got in on this cause one of the Suckit City stores got an attitude with me when I tried to pricematch it recently. Screw-them! My rebates say purchase must be during 9/5/00 - 9/10/00 too.
This rocks!

Me and a friend went to buy one each today. While in the store, my friend called the 800 number on the rebates and the lady on the other end said this was legit and both CC rebates would work. As always though, take this info for what it is worth.

Well, I looked at the rebates and different forms #'s and they got to different Depts so they should be different rebates.

I just bought an open box model. They printed out a receipt with this fact and gave me three letters on their stationary stating that I didn't have a box so there was no UPC.Who knows if it will work but it probably will for the CC rebate. however, both CC rebates say all you need is a copy of the UPC and I can get one of those 🙂

I am not sure this double rebate is a mistake. The sales guy said that they couldn't sell these things because they were so expensive. Everyone is trying to clear these things out because they supposedly are last years model. Also, he indicated that TIVO reimbursed them for their rebates.

There is a 100 rebate at CC for the Replay TV. Keep on the lookout for a deal there 🙂

Btw, the two CC rebates have different phone numbers. Not sure why.

I don't know if it's the same with you, but I have the same UPC sticker in my user manual that's on the box. If so, you can probably use that too (of course this is for those of you out there that don't ever read or even look at those things).

Thank you so much for posting this! I just got home with my new Tivo, with all three rebates printed out just as you said they would.

My local Sears still has the Tivo for $199, so I asked the salesman to pricematch with them, he scurried off to find the salesman that 'normally' works in that area. The second salesman eventually came and immediately got on the phone, presumably to his manager, and started asking about doing the pricematch, the last phrase I overheard him say was "..what about...<mumbles>..rebate...". He got off the phone and said "okay" and made out the price for $189.90! I was getting anxious by then, I hadn't mentioned any rebates. The credit card receipt printed out, I signed it, he hit Enter, then the rebates started spewing LOL. He started taking them from the printer, looking at them, then setting them aside. When the Tivo rebate printed out, he handed it to me with the brief explanation of what it was, but he still had the other two in 'his pile', so I asked "Is that another rebate?" (I don't think he was going give them to me) then I got a little more of the story.
He told me yes it is another mail-in rebate and that it was supposed to be over by now, that's why they initially didn't want to give me the pricematch "but you are already getting a great deal anyway" he said. So I said "I'm confused (I have that kind of face), you mean I could actually mail in the CC Rebate and get another $100 back besides the Tivo rebate?" Thats when he handed me one of the two rebates slips in 'his pile' and started grinning, "yeh, you could actually make 5 dollars" I started thanking him then and that's when he handed me the last rebate slip from 'his pile' and said "here's a copy of the rebate slip, in case you mess up the first one".
The second CC rebate slip is not a copy of course, but he didn't seem to realize that. I am suspicious about both of the $100 CC rebates going through, but they do look slightly different so I am hopeful. Either way, it should end up being free (or better) for me and it sure made my day, thanks again for posting this deal.

Have you checked out the tivo web site. In the fine print it says "Valid only for new TiVo Personal TV Recorders purchased from a retailer. Not valid for refurbished, pre-owned, second party, demo, or display units." I was just about to buy an open box my self but I decided not to (he was giving it to me for $249). What do you think would an open box unit qualify for a tivo rebate?

Is this deal dead?

I just went to Circuit City today (9/8) at lunch and bought
the 14 hour Tivo.
Only TWO rebates were printed from the machine: #8426 (from
CC) and #8100 (the Tivo activation one). I did NOT get the
most recent rebate #8585 printed out.

VERY WEIRD.

I was ready to bring the Tivo back, when I realized that on
the Circuit City Web Site, rebate #8585 can actually be printed
out! #8426 is the one that is supposedly expired on the Web Site,
while #8585 is still valid.

Perhaps someone at HQ said "pull one of the rebates" and they
pulled the wrong one?

Another annoyance: The circuit city rebate form you print out from
their Web site requires the ORIGINAL UPC. The Tivo rebate (from
Tivo) also requires the original UPC. However, someone
said that if you print the
Tivo rebate out from the Tivo site, that one doesn't require the
UPC. Phew!

Well having bought mine about 3 weeks ago when the first rebate appeared, I went back to CC to see if they would print out another receipt with a current date so I could take advantage of the double rebate. They did, but warned me that the rebate processing center MAY NOT honor both. There is supposed to be only one CC rebate in effect even though there are two different program codes. So I guess we'll see what happens. I expected only the one rebate, so if I don't get the other, I won't lose any sleep over it. Let's hope it works out! 🙂

I purchased a "free" TIVO at Circuit City on Route 1 in Lawrenceville, NJ today. Here's how it went for me:

--Two $100 rebate receipts were printed out at the time of purchase.

--One is for the rebate from Tivo, which requires service activation, and for which you must send in the original UPC code and a copy of the sales receipt. (Program No. 8100) UPDATE: The rebate form from the Tivo web site does not mention the UPC. I called the Tivo rebate hotline and they said a copy of the UPC is required.

--The other is from Circuit City, and on the rebate sheet it says it is valid from 9/5/00 to 9/10/00, and for which you must send in a copy of the UPC code and a copy of the sales receipt. (Program No. 8426)

--The CC rebate hotline says Program No. 8426 ended 9/4/00, and is also shown on the CC website that way. This is contrary to my store-printed rebate sheet, which I intend to submit and insist on my claim.

--The third rebate sheet did not print out at the time of purchase, but a rebate form is available on the CC website. This form states, "Offer applies to purchases made at your local Circuit City store (USA only) between Sept. 5, 2000 and Sept. 10, 2000. To qualify you must return the original dated Circuit City sales receipt. Only original forms may be used, no reproductions or facsimiles allowed. Make a copy of this form for your records." Further down it says, "To redeem your rebate: (1) Mail a print out of the rebate form (front and back required), and (2a) a copy of your store receipt...and (3) the original UPC code from product packaging." (Program No. 8585)

--The CC rebate hotline says that all CC rebates--this one, Program No. 8585, included--require only copies of sales receipts and UPCs, no originals. This is good, because my original UPC is already going to Tivo for their rebate.

--Just in case, I had the store print out duplicate sales receipts for me.

Getting the third rebate paid is going to require a combination of luck and complaining, I think...

Hey SteveO,

Sounds like you had the exact same experience as I did when
buying the Tivo (only two rebates printed out, etc.).

Note that if you go to the Tivo site (www.tivo.com) and print
out the rebate coupon from that site (which can be used in lieu
of the Tivo rebate form that printed out from CC), it does NOT
require the UPC. I'm going to use the coupon from the Web site
which frees me to send the UPC to CC with the rebate coupon
I had to print out from their Web site. I know what they say
on the phone, but why give them the chance to deny you the
rebate for any reason? If you don't need the UPC to send to
Tivo, you can send it to CC...

Here's what happened in my case (Atlanta, GA)

They only had the display model available, so I asked what kind of a price break I could get on it. The guy balked at my insistence, even offered to have his wife pick up one in a store by his home so I would have all the original materials! I kept on with the open box, so he obliged, telling me that it would drop to $239. Much to my luck, the clerk couldn't find the "wire package" and was able to knock off another $20. I was pumped, $219 plus $300 in rebates! The best part is that another sales rep came running out as I was leaving with the "wire package," which also included the manual. I had already been rung up for the deep discount of $219 so that was just bonus. The rebates printed, Tivo's and 8426. I came home and printed out 8585.

I now need the forum's help. I understand that the CC rebates require a copy of the UPC, but I don't have the original box. I do have a sticker on the inside back cover of the manual that looks like it would be acceptable. Can anyone confirm this or advise? How about a detailed description of EXACTLY what to do?

PS - Anyone notice the postmark date required for the CC online rebate? "By: September 35, 2000" I guess we've got time. 🙂

An open box does not necessarily mean it is a demo or display unit.
There is a legal requirement that CC has to sell certain things as an "open box". Now, whether you can make that argument with TIVO is another story as the receipt will say it was a return or a store display model. (paraphrased)

I have a letter from CC stating that mine was a return. I would suggest calling TIVO. I haven't done that yet.
Of course there are other ways to get around this but I will leave that to your imagination.

Kwad,

I don't see where CC needs an original UPC. The CC rebate hotline guy says all their rebates require only copies. IOW, you don't have to cut up the box at all, I think.

Steve

The whole thing with the demo units is that is has to be a first time activation on the unit, so that if somebody had signed up for the service on that unit, you couldn't get the rebate. (Because otherwise people could cancel their subscription and start up a new one on the same box...easy money).
If the unit is already registered with them, you may be SOL on their rebate. Just an FYI.

Wanna hear something strange? I bought mine at CC and it was the last one left in Smithhaven NY.... When I got it home The tape seal was broken and most of the wires were scattered around inside the box RE: ( suspected it was returned)...

Even worse, when I got the thing on it already had 7 howard stern shows taped!!!

And the SERIAL was already registered!!!! To WHO ?!?!?!?!?!??!

Circuit City CORPORATE in NJ !!!! I was just going to leave it registered to them and have free service, but I was pissed I wouldn't get my add 100.00!!! So they are gonna call me on Wed to straigten it out.

Uhhhh, you know I think that might be against the law (depending on your state) and it is certainly against the store policy. Well at least store policy in my state. They have to notify you that it is an open box model.

I would pursue them aggressively for something 'extra'. Of course, CC is on my hit list so I am a little biased.

Btw, is it easy to find out who the Tivo is registered to when you try to register or do you think it was only easy because it was a business.

Here is a free TIVO giveaway...I can just hear mine now...I should get a TIVO because your authorized dealer jacked me around on a price match and caused me so much mental duress I can't shop in a store for them anymore without having flashbacks...lolol

OK, so today I call around a find 2 stores that each have one in stock, both 40min drive in opposite directions. I go to the first one and buy it and get only 2 rebate froms with my print out, one for CC and one for TiVo. I drive all the way to the second one and get the same thing, 2 rebate forms (one for CC and one for TiVo), not 3. Where is the 2nd CC rebate form that is supposedly to expire tomarrow? Can anyone tell me if it's on the net. Secondly, I'm in a delemma, the first store gave me the 30 hour TiVo even though I paid for the 14 hour that's on the reciept. I think I will have a problem with the serial numbers when it comes to the rebates, but I don't thinks it's fair that I have to drive 40 min. back to this store to see if there is another 14hour unit. I was told that this was the last one. What to do?
