Gates going down is bad news....what was he thinking? Why did he even try to get up there, it was obvious he was gonna get smashed.

Lucky for them, the Titans/Vince Young are terrible, so despite their offense not playing, it's still only a 3 point game.

Think the Titans will make a switch after the half if Young can't get anything done this drive?

He was trying to get up. This is the NFL not some touch football game.

Uh-huh. There are tons of rules protecting players in these situations.

Not really. You've got the ball. You're not down. The play is live. I can hit you as hard as I want to break the ball loose.

Yet, you're the only one complaining about it. You think the commentators would have made a single comment about it if it wasn't a clean hit. Yes, the Titans should have slowed down to touch him, giving him an extra second to get off his knees and then he'd rumbled right pass them.

A friend of mine (Titans fan from Nashville) went to the game and bought the tickets from some guy on craiglist. The SD fan that sold him the tickets didn't want to go because '55 degrees is too cold for a football game'. WTF?????

I would agree normally. However this guy is on the ground and cannot shield himself. He obviously could not get up in time. In other words, he was a sitting duck. There were 3 Titans who hit him. The ground is a hard object, and that is a high injury risk. Therefore in that situation, I would say it was unneccessary roughness because the player wasn't going anywhere. And they weren't going to cause a fumble with the guy sitting on the ground, either.

Well I may be, and in the future this may be addressed. Rules change all the time. I respect your opinion, but not your approach. I'll ignore you from now on.

then they need to change the rules saying that if you are down (without being hit) then you are down. play stoped. like they do in college.

BUT this is not college. they are NEVER going to put in that rule. the hit was legal and the right thing to do. he had the ball and was trying to get up.

there have been many plays where they have got up and ran for TDs.

Titan's D stopping LT surprisingly well. Plus they're getting to Chargers QB rivers ALOT.

Rivers finally starting to make some plays in the passing game. They need that.

That is not what I was saying. I don't like the college rule where if a player hits the ground, he cannot get up. There are too many instances where a player is by himself and could easily get up and continue the play. This play was of a different variety, where he was on the ground and 3 guys were in the immediate vicinity and he OBVIOUSLY did not have time to get up and go anywhere. He also could not shield himself. Therefore, I think this particular instance was a player helpless on the ground with a high chance of injury that DID get injured. I think in this case, the ref could blow the whistle the same way they do when a RB or QB hits a wall of players and is just being pushed back. They don't wait until he is wrestled down in that case to blow the whistle, it is obvious the play is dead. Same thing here.
