i suppose it depends on what cable modem you have. If your cable modem will NAT your connection for you (meaning its a router), then yes, a hub/switch will do it.

I've had that problem with my linksys lately, its an oldie so I can bare to replace it with my new cisco 831 SOHO router. itegrated cablemodem / router units == more chance of somthing going wrong. I would try a different router and see if it continues. I'm sure the suggestion to update the firmware has been made aswell. but do try another router / brand.

as an FYI you should not have these kinds of problems with a router, in fact they make your internet connection more stable...not less.

I don't want to jinx things, but i've had it up for 30 mins now (neither linksys nor netgear held up this long)...

I am going to visit my grandfather at the hospital, if it is still up when I get back, I declare a success.

yes it's my router... when I directly connect to the internet I do not have the problem... When I connect the modem to the router to the internet, I get disconnects..

fyi it wasn't fixed with the dlink, but atleast the dlink resets itself...

Unless you think the modem is incompatible with the router?

You shouldnt have those problems with a router. The problem with Netgear/Linksys/etc routers is they are built cheaply, and have cheap components, and the QA generally isnt very good. Some companies are worse than others. Sometimes you get a bad router, sometimes they might produce batches of bad routers. It happens. If you're set on using a router from one of those companies as opposed to building your own (Linux) then you'll just have to keep trying until you get one that works.

It sucks, but thats the way those guys do business.

Good luck.

I dunno... it's a 3com modem that looks like a shark fin...

And to answer the persons posts about "cheap" routers, i've had this problem with netgear, dlink, and linksys... if this is the case, then why don't they just stop making routers all together if they suck so bad? Sorry, I don't have the $$ to build another rig, or to buy an expensive router... Why don't they have this problem with "cheap" wireless routers?

aRCeNiTe, I have the first version of that RP614 Netgear router and it works great with my cable modem. It never loses its connection.

In my experience those problems with routers are caused by electricial power problems like spikes and brown outs. If you put your router on a UPS you'd see a whole new level of stability for your Internet connection.

I had that 3COM Sharkfin cable modem, and it wasn't very reliable. This was before I had a router, so I know the cable modem was the problem. I kept calling the cable company about all of the times I'd lose my Internet connection and they finally replaced the Sharkfin with a Motorola Surfboard SB4101. That made a huge difference.

I have had that Shark fin modem for 3 years now, and it never has given me any problems. I have used it with a router ( a cheap wal-mart router at that) no problems at all.

Thank you for your response... I will try calling the cable company... everything is running off a UPS in my computer room.

Edit: Does it make a difference that the internet connection light on my router continuously blinks even though i'm not accessing the internet?

I did not say all of them were bad routers. The routers are built cheaply, cheap does not equal bad, but cheap can equal taking a gamble, as these companies do not typically devote as many dollars to QA and support as do some of the companies that build the more expensive routers. Please dont misinterpret what I said as meaning that you will always have these problems if you choose the "cheap" routers. I've seen some routers that have been going for over 2 years and never had a problem, and then I've seen some routers of the same brand bought a month ago that are already dead.

And who said "cheap" wireless routers dont have this problem? I've replaced my share of wireless routers from the home brands, some of which are not even 3 months old yet.

Like others and I have said, you should not be having these problems. Your problem is that you either got a bunch of bad routers, or that you have a bad cable modem. You said when you directly connect to the cable modem you have no problems, but so far no matter what router you've hooked it up to you're having problems. The chances of you getting that many bad routers is pretty slim. I would have your cable company look at the modem, like was already suggested.

Also, have you tried using a different cable to connect your cable modem to the router? If you're using the same cable with every router, it's possible that you have a bad cable.

Dlink has been a pretty solid brand for me, I hope it works for you and your cable company determines your modem to be the problem so you can stop dealing with this. It would frustrate the hell out of me.

Good luck.

just out of sparks, whos your ISP?

PS generally they will not support routers some even prohibit them in their TOS. if you want to use ICS or a router your generally on your own.

the other thing I would try is setting the keep-alive setting on your router if it keeps up.

My ISP is comcast, I will try to replace the modem before I do anything else.
