Good luck man, you've realized the problem, just be sure to keep the willpower to follow through. Don't start too hard on the exercise either, if you make yourself too sore you're not going to be as likely to continue. Take it slow for a while and work yourself into a routine.

I need to lose weight around my stomach and chest and build muscle at the same time.

First off, this is impossible. Try to lose the fat first by eating healthy foods and running/cardio 4 times a week. Then worry about building that muscle. You may be surprised how much you actually have under the fat.

We had a few training mottos that I think may help inspire you:

1. Train hard, win.
2. Pain is weakness leaving the body.

The more it hurts while you do it, the better it'll feel after you stop. Literally run your a$$ off :D

Way to go man. You've got a good start. Keep it up.

I saw it mentioned once, but I would recomend Body for Life as well. I believe it is a good place to start for somebody that may be clueless (no offense) and doesn't know where to start.

I think most people mentioned what you should do; eat right, cardio, weight training.

Don't forget to stretch! Don't push yourself too hard, just making exercise a habit should be an early goal.

Ehhhh, having some fat on you is the easiest way to build muscle man . Do you really think people drink bulk powder while lifting because it directly makes their muscles bigger????

Oh, something else, even though you may feel ambitious and what not, you gotta start off easy or you will burn yourself out.

Sure, would be nice to get up and all of sudden run tons, work out a lot, etc. But, just start of a bit slow then work you way up.

I bought:
100 lb weight set and a bench
Gloves
Adjustable hand weights (so I can use the weights from my weight set)
Running Shoes (I didn't own any sneakers... can you believe that?)
Big jug of powder protein shake stuff, going to have one of these from lunch from now on
Men?s multi-vitamins
Apples/oranges/bananas - every kind of fruit they sold
Diet Dr. Pepper

Well this should start me off! I have made this schedule from the various web pages posted and help from you guys.

Sat, Sun & Monday
Mourning - Stretch and Jog 4 laps around my block (1 mile) 5:00 AM
Night - Stretch and Jog 4 laps around my block (1 mile) 9:00 PM

Tuesday - Wednesday
Morning - Stretch 5:00 AM
Mid-day - Stretch and Weight Lifting 3:00 PM
Night - Stretch and Jog 4 laps around my block (1 mile) 9:00 PM

Thursday-Friday
Rest Day

Saturday-Sun
Mourning - Stretch and Jog 4 laps around my block (1 mile) 5:00 AM
Night - Stretch and Jog 4 laps around my block (1 mile) 9:00 PM

What do ya think??? My goal is to stick to this routine for 1 month (have to start small!) I have gotten rid of all the soda and junk food from my house (fed some to my dog, gave rest to me neighbors). I'll be eating Kellogg?s Healthy start in the mourning with some fruit, lunch is a protein shake and dinner is normal. What do ya think???

100lbs isn't nearly enough, take that stuff back to walmart and get into a REAL gym. Stay away from "24 hour fitness" places like Bally's. Find a hole in the wall HARDCORE gym. You will thank yourself later.

Also the guy linking to elitefitness.com, I would stay away from there. Try a real BB board at www.anabolex.com

I dropped 43 lbs and 5" on my waist and have have kept it off. I stopped the chips, the sodas, the ice cream, brownies, chicken wings, pizza, candy, etc etc etc. And then I ate salads and with moderation. Yeah, so I go without, but I feel and look great. Good luck.

actually, eating burgers is fine. just leave out the crap like extra ketchup, mayonnaise, etc. lettuce & tomato is all you need w/your burger. might be a lil bland, but oh well. ask the cook to not use butter on anything.

Elitefitness isn't a Bodybuilding board. It's for people who want to really get strong, not just look pretty. Cablegod's advice is sound. Hell, I'm not a very big or strong guy but I can lift and carry more than 100 lbs. per hand for a short distance.

That'll help, but AFAIK weight training is mostly for tone/muscle sculpture. I'd just do a ton of cardio if I were you.

Getting a good wieght lifting regimen, in addition to cardio, will help you burn more fat. Try looking at Body for Life. Basically you follow a diet 6 days a week. You alternate cardio and wieght training everyother day for those 6 days. The diet is a high protein diet. I have been on it for two weeks now and am feeling great.

YOu won't get anywhere with excerising. You rbody will adjust to the reduced calories if you try to diet. If you don't really want to "diet", just make a conscious effort to cut out white foods, like white bread, refined sugar, and other stuff made from white flour. Get 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day (not juice but the real thing).

Everytime, before you go to eat something, ask yourself "do I really need this?". You will lose like jared on the subway diet.

First of all... Congrats on your decision to get into shape. I am in the same boat. I am 6'4 and weigh 322 lbs. I have an XL frame so I am really only about 50 lbs over weight. I have skipped some of what has been posted so I hope I am not rehashing some other posts.

I am on my own diet that I am calling the GOYA diet.

Get
Off
Your
A$$

In all seriousness... If you burn off what you take in + some then you will lose weight. If you catch yourself sitting around eating twinkies and watching TV... You are probably not goint to lose weight. Get off your a$$ and you will see weight loss. There are "magic pills" that will increase your metabolism etc... Skip those. As soon as you stop taking them, you will gain back. Same as getting on the No Carb diet... With the GOYA diet, you really can eat what you want depending on how much you want to burn.

I just saw your post...

I have gone to K-Mart and returned with new stuff!

Diet Dr. Pepper

1. Skip the protein powder... waste of money and they also usually have lots of carbs that your body turns to fat easily. The only people that really should use the drink mixes are ones wanting to gain wieght.
2. (FYI) Weight bench isn't going to help lose weight, it will help build muscle. The muscle will reside under the layer of fat until the fat is used by the body.
3. Multi Vitamins are good only if you don't have a good diet. Much of what is in a MV will be peed out without the body ever touching it.
Fruits and veggies are good... Add veggies to the fruits you bought.
4. I am weak when it comes to Soda's. it is proven that the Carbonation gas (Carbon Dioxide I think) prevents your blood from transporting oxygen and Calcium. To what degree it harms... I don't know.

Good job on making the decision and good luck. I am going to create a website and track my body change and diet for others use to see if I really am successfull and to use if I am. Feel free to PM me.

This book kicks ass! Go buy it. Strength Training Anatomy by Frederic Delavier "This ultimate strength reference contains full-color, detailed, anatomical drawings of exercises that target every major muscle group, along with full descriptions of how to perform them. The illustrations graphically depict both the muscles and the bones, with variations showing how the exercises can be modified to isolate specific muscles.

I'll be eating Kellogg?s Healthy start in the mourning with some fruit, lunch is a protein shake and dinner is normal. What do ya think???
You seriously need to rethink your diet. How many calories are you consuming everday? How is stand's right now, you'll be starving and won't have enough energy to do your workouts. Try not to eat processed foods. Add more vegetables to your diet. Choose leaner cuts of meat like fish and chicken. Eat throughout the day; maybe 6 small meals instead of 3 regular ones. Try to incorporate some protein in every meal. Cut out late night snacking. Drink tons of water (8-10 glasses).

You should rethink your workout schedule as well.
This is your current schedule: CARDIO (Sat, Sun, Mon) & STRENGTH TRAINING (Tues, Wed). It's best if you space out your weight training days since your muscles will most likely be sore the next day and they need recovery time. Continue to run everyday but add weight training on Sat, Mon, and Wednesday. Concentrate on different muscles each day and use heavy weights. Really work them until they burn and you can't lift anymore. The book that I linked above you help decide which exercises to perform. Always stretch after each workout.
