Study during the day/at the library.

Become really organized and have a calendar of when things need to be done and stuff.

Definitely read the text before going into lecture and attempt problems...it's tough, but pays off tremendously.

Start homework problems right after the class/lecture finishes while it's still fresh in your mind.

Freshman year you're gonna be grouped with a lot of people probably playing videogames/watching t.v./movies all day If you get sucked into that you won't start your work till late and won't get any sleep...and you will have s*itty sleep till you get an apartment/own room

bring lots of duct tape.

oh yah, you'll probably meet all your friends for the next 4 yrs your freshman year...be social as people have been saying!

Not true. The college bookstores usually have the worst return on books and are very picky about what they take back. You'll make more money selling your books on amazon or ebay.. you'll also be able to sell things like workbooks, old editions and books that don't allow being sold back if the shrink-wrap is ripped.

They'll give me a solid 50% of retail here, online prices are lower than that. I should know, I already "mistakenly" bought a few books for the wrong classes, and flipped them around on the bookstore.

odd. my school paid back 10% of the book's price. 10 stinkin' percent. naturally, i did a lot better posting fliers and selling my "used but great condition" books for about $10-20 off the bookstore prices.

wearing flip-flops in the shower is definitely something to do, not just out of respect. you do not want to get athlete's foot or step on someone's droppings, whatever they may be.

Make sure your testes drop and talk to the hot girls. It's the last shot you'll EVER get before those hot girls are YOUR FVCKING BOSS.

WTF? Sell on half.com, not the book store. You have just given the worst advice almost ever...

lol, I love the last one :D. Well said

lmao! I loved the last one too. I scored major brownie points with a prof after insulting a bunch of students in class who were "too busy" to get their homework done.

My tips: ALWAYS get to know your profs, especially in those introductory courses with 1-200 students in them. Stop by during office hours and ask some intelligent questions, even if you know the answers. If you show motivation and interest in the class, that 89 average my very well be bumped up to an A. If the prof doesn't have a clue who you are, that 89 is a B. That's the difference between 4.0 and 3.0. In fact, at some universities, non-tenured profs have a sort of quota - they can't give too many A's and are expected to fail a certain percentage of their students. I failed a philosophy course once - all of the work was in paper and essay form. Unfortunately, I majorly pissed of the prof in class. I had all A's and B's until that point and all F's thereafter. (hint: when asked "what's the deep meaning behind this painting," the answer is never "maybe the artist was just bored and doodling; I know I'm just bored and the doodles in my notebook have no more meaning than that.")

Check addall.com for your books - they search dozens of book places. Paperback overseas editions from overseas are identical in content, yet including shipping, they're still often only 50% or less of the book store's price.

Treat college like an 8 to 5 job. Got that break from 1 to 3? Use it to study. You'll find yourself with a lot more free time at night.

Never procrastinate on papers; get them done as soon as possible. Oftentimes, if the paper is finished a week or more in advance, profs are willing to "proof-read" them for you and make suggestions. That B or C paper easily gets edited to an A paper.
Bonus: You get to mock the people pulling all-nighters to finish the paper on time.

Very helpful: Find out how to get old tests that profs have given in the past. At one school I went to, they kept a collection of them in the library. Greatest study guides ever!

And the most important advice: Friday and Saturday nights were made for parties. But, there are parties every night of the week. Don't go to parties other than Fri and/'or Sat. Never miss classes and never attempt to learn while hung over.

For some classes, you could show up only for the tests and get an A. (profs don't like this though and word gets around among them.) Show up anyway. Other classes, if you miss 1 hour, even with someone else's notes, you may end up spending 3 or 4 hours trying to understand the material.

Oh, and lastly, sit up front in the first or 2nd row. Far fewer distractions, plus good for unwritten bonus points (i.e. that 89 becomes an A) Sociology studies have shown that when students get to sit where they want, those in the center front have much higher grades than those out in the corners in the back.

Good luck.

This is good advice, this is the only thing I have changed since HS where I was a 2.3 GPA, now my college GPA is like 3.7 so far and I'm on my junior year.

Sitting up front changed everything.

Cause lord knows I still dont study or do homework. :D

A few of mine with the whole 10 years out of college hindsight:

-even if you skated through highschool don't assume you can in college Someone else said it and I'll second it with first hand knowledge: you'll seriously damage your GPA and lose your scholarships

-go to every class. If the professor mysteriously hands out some sample problems the week before the final exam THOSE PROBLEMS (with slight changes) WILL BE ON THE FINAL.

-you are NEVER too old to start a 4 year college degree program. Those 4 years are going to pass either way, whether you get a degree at the end or not. Now that you're an adult, 4 years is a flash, a blink of an eye.

-borrow as much money as it takes to go to college. Don't skip college because you don't like debt. "They" can't repossess your education.

-education is important even if it doesn't lead to a job. Remember that a lot of liberal arts degrees do not have one to one career options i.e. my wife has a degree in Russian Studies... ever heard of a Russian Studyer? But you know what? Getting that degree changed her life and is her proudest moment.

-There are always a lot of doomsayers around that say that "oh that college sucks", "the professors are too liberal", "they screwed me" blah blah blah blah. They say these things to excuse their personal failings. Ignore them.

-When writing a paper, write a lot and don't make any changes at all. None. Write the whole thing. If you keep editing the first paragraph you'll never get done. Or you'll have one hell of a first paragraph and everything else will suck. BUT I do recommend using an outline for your paper if you don't get hung up on the outline and edit it to death and then never get to the first paragraph.

Oh gosh have I fell for that one in my freshman year. I didn't need to blow hundreds of dollars on the books. Oh well, live and learn.

get off the forums and study.
First year is where everyone fvcks up and I wish I had the opportunity to redo it.
Focus and forget about having fun. You can have plenty of fun the other years, just get yourself on your feet first.

Yes, there is.

As a roommate, you have the responsibility to tread as lightly as possible, not only for your own roommate, but for those in rooms around you.

Speakers easily carry over to the other dorms.
