Once when me and my family went to the Cheesecake Factory in Las Vegas, they ran after us and asked for the required $20 tip after we left the restaurant because we only gave them a $7 tip instead of a $20 tip

You said it yourself, it was required.

how can tip possibly be required?

The same way they require a certain amount of money for their food. And they require you to pay tax as well. If a tip is required, then you're made aware of it before the meal, and you agree to that, just like you agree to the price of the food.

Was it an automatic large party gratuity? Like 6 or 8 people or more that has it printed on the menu?
Or do they want everyone to leave 20 dollars?

thats what i was wondering, what if i go in for a slice...ok 2 slices of cheesecake and some milk? certainly they wouldnt expect a 20 on a bill little more than half that

Did you know when you left the $7 tip that a $20 tip was required?

how can a tip be required? if some jackass came up to me wanting the extra $13 i would insist on getting my $7 back.

If it's listed on the menu... usually it's only for larger parties. It's a bit tacky IMO, but so is tipping poorly.

They can require anything they want. You agree to it when you order something. They can require you to eat their dish the way they prepare it (no modifications.) They can require you to tip a certain amount. They can even require you to wear whatever they want you to!

And for those that I know will run in here and cry foul... "well, look at what they make... they need the tip to live", go whine somewhere else.

I had absoloutely horrible service at a sushi restaurant a few weeks ago... on a $120 check, our waitress got her deserved $6.

The place was almost empty... she took 20 minutes to get our drinks... she brought two of my friends' food 30 minutes later, mine and two other friends' food 20 minutes after that! We waited forever to get any glimpse of her to get refills, and then asked for the check. It took seriously, another 20 minutes to get it. It was easily the worst service I have ever had at a Japanese restaurant, and I let her know it.

lol seriously

i dont fault you though if it was that bad of service

once i tipped and spelled "thank you" with pennies. she deserved every bit of that humiliation because it was the worst waitressing ive ever seen. spilled a drink, messed up my burger, never filled up the drinks, and made some incredibly uncalled for comments.

i figured the penny trick would be worse than no tip at all.

dude what is your problem? now im pissed at you for leaving $6. that is clearly a case for $0. bringing the food out 20 minutes apart is insane. i understand not having enough hands to carry 6 plates, but that is just crazy.

How hard is it to do 10%? That should be easy. Add 50% of that value and u get 15%. It's not too damn hard. I just round up in the end to the nearest dollar. Hey, I wuold be paying 15% at Cheesecake Factory.

So what if its printed at the bottom. Tip is almost mandatory from the ethics point of view. It's not mandatory in the sense that someone's not going to put a gun to your head and make you pay your 15%, but I have never NOT tipped. I have had crappy service where I give roughly 10% or even lower, but I always tip.

Eh, I don't think there's been a case where I've never left a tip before... thinking about it, I left her a buck on my $24 order, since we all split it. About what she deserved in full...

No, because the server is gauranteed a decent tip even if he gives lousy service. It removes the incentive for him/her to provide decent service which is the whole point of a tip to begin with.

Nah.....Ethics would be serving well and then expecting a tip.... Why in the world should we tip someone for wasting our time, providing lousy service and not doing the job they are supposed to do? IMO, that's just sheer waste of your hard earned money...

i think it's a good idea for me (the customer). doing the quick math i'm always afraid i was going to leave too small of a tip. with this i have a feel of the ballpark without having to do the math.

Yes, but the service has been rendered when it's time to leave the tip.

I think it's a good idea.
I was up in CT visiting my gf, and we ate at this really nice place where the food was great and the service was even better. The meal total came to about $60, and I wrote $5 for the tip, thinking that was enough. Then I saw the 10% 15% 20% thing at the bottom and realized I was an idiot and it was too little so I scratched out the $5 and wrote $12 instead.

Alcohol was served :p
