Tips calculated on restaurant check.....good idea?

i recently saw a restaurant check that had the gratuity calculated at 10%, 15%, and 20% printed at the bottom. it wasn't added of course, just a quick guide for the mathematically imparied. what do you guys think of this idea? i thought it was rather handy to see it, rather than calculate it. i've only seen it once, has anyone else seen it before?

it just seems like a rather obvious thing to have on a restaurant check. but then again, i guess that it might limit over-tipping. people who want to leave a lot might think twice after seeing that they are leaving more than 20%....

it's easy to do the mental math... move the decimal left once for 10%, roughly double or divide in half for 5 or 20 %

I think its a good idea nonetheless

calculating tip while drunk is rough

I think a tip should be given only by choice, so, them putting it at the bottom of the check makes it seem as if they're making you tip them.

Yeah, I have seen it a lot before....But what irritates me is restaurants that add 18% gratuity and then leave a blank space for tips without mentioning the gratuity on the credit card receipt....what do they expect me to pay for tips 100%?

The sales tax here is 7.5% so I usually doubled it to calculate a 15% tip...works even if you are drunk...

I wouldn't mind seeing it printed on there, but it really bugged me one time when the waiter WROTE it on there, and the "15%" tip that he calculated for me was actually 20% of the bill.

how can tip possibly be required? I probably would never go to a restaurant if tip was required, unless I know I will get good service. I always thought tip was only given if service was good. So it being required will cause waiters/waitresses to be lazy, since they know they'll get it anyways.

btw, I use to wait, and I usually tip at least 15%-20%, but if the service is terrible, I rarely tip, maybe 10%. One time, a waitress ignored my gf and I for a long time. We didnt get our menus or drinks until 15 mins after we were seated. we spotted her talking to her friends in a corner and laughing. I tipped her 1 dollar for a $50 bill. It was absolutely the worst service I've ever had, it was at outback steakhouse.

that is one of the absolute shakiest things i've ever heard. if i ever stumbled into some screwed up place that required a tip i probably would stay but definitely would never return.

Was it an automatic large party gratuity? Like 6 or 8 people or more that has it printed on the menu?
Or do they want everyone to leave 20 dollars?

you are not required to leave a tip. But you are to pay for food.

we as a society should probably call it a service charge instead of tip, because that's just misleading. Also, I edited my post above, read it when you have time.

well, now that I think of it, tip is understandably required if the party is greater than 10 since its a big group and there might be stingy friends who likes to let others take care of the tip (usually that person is me taking care of other's tips 🙁). And in the case where there are stingy friends and tip isn't required the waiter/waitress will be screwed.


edit: man! dont' you hate it when you end up being the one to fork out extra cash because of your friends? Im' that guy ALL the freaking time, mainly because I make the most money. For my gf's birthday, for the sake of being polite, i forked out 15 bucks over what I had to pay (including tax and tip), instead of arguing in public who should pay. Someone didn't pay for their appetizer, and not one fessed up to whose it belonged to!

If they ran after me and told me there was a 'required tip', I would have told them to fark off and I'd want my 7% back. Gratuity is exactly that, gratuity. I can understand for large groups... but not crap like that. If the service is terrible, they can wipe their arse with my 5%, if it's great... they'll get my 20%.
