That was in an episode of Cheers. The patron lays 5 one dollar bills out on the table and tells Carla, "This is your tip for the night. Every mistake you make, I take away one dollar." She dumps a beer in his lap, hands him one of his bills, pockets the other 4 and walks away.

If pizza-delivery guys simply got paid more and couldn't recieve tips, they'd have no incentive to deliver the pizza faster and hurry back to get more. They'd drive around.

Then they'd get fired, and someone with a decent work ethic would get hired. How do you think people in other jobs manage to get work done with no tip? They get paid a fair wage, and if they decide they don't want to do the work they're hired to do properly they get canned. It's pretty simple.

Tip in the US is almost like an extra tax, just that people don't realize that.
When I say 'get rid of the tipping system' the answer is always '... but then restaurants can't keep the prices low...'
Well, duh...... you will most likely pay the same anyway.

Some crackpots even tip people who already make a good living.

I'd like to PayPal you a tip for this great post.

American work ethic explained in one simple sentence, nice

I'm glad we don't have to tip here in Australia, we already get screwed over enougth with high taxes, high vehicle rego costs, high fuel prices (currently AU$1.49 per litre), piss poor government services(the health system here in NSW is a joke...and I have private health insurance) extremely low wages... damn I could be here all night.

Getting fired is an incentive not to just drive around.

I usually pay for dinner in cash. It works like this, if my meal was 14.00, I gave you a 20.00 bill and you brought me back a 5.00 and a 1.00 bill, you are getting a 1.00 tip. If you brought me back 6 1.00 bills. You are going to get a 3.00 tip.

So suck it.

No, our waiters and waitress are driven by their mood... if they don't give a damn about making money and just want to go home, then they make you feel like they don't give a damn about you and just want you to go home.

With tipping, if your food is running late, is cold, or the wait staff is just flat out BUSY... then they are the ones who get crapped on for it. The kitchen staff, the reason you are there, still gets every penny they were on the clock for... and some places have the nerve to make the wait staff surrender a portion of their tips to them.

With tipping, if you don't like your food or service, you don't tip. But then you get called a cheapass (among other things), and if they ever notice you in their restaurant again, you probably get spit in your food and a bad attitude. Tipping has become to most people a given right, not the act of courtesy and reward it is supposed to. Too many waiters and waitresses are spoiled brats and that's the problem. They are like the kid that gets whatever they want because if they don't, they're gonna throw a fit and not do what they are told. Not all... but many.

For the record, I have no problem tipping more or less for good/bad service. Don't cry to me if you can't make rent because you have a piss poor attitude or don't make me enjoy visiting your establishment. Learn to do your job like the people that I tip extra to. You want to make $5 from one person in a 40 minute span? EARN IT. I work a crappy job for crappy pay but I work my ass off for that pay. I'm not going to just hand it off to you because it's the social norm.

And for the record, if tipping worked like it was supposed to, that'd be fine by me. A tip should not be expected. There should be no "15%"... a tip should be EARNED.
