I read on MSN that tips stands for something like "thanks in-advance for proper service" and that the word/gesture isn't used the same way back then, as it is today.

It's just customery, i used to work as a waiter, and was told that despite my low wages, i could expect probally 100 dollars a night from tips. So rather than pursuing a higher paying job, I took that job and did make a good amount of money in tips. The restuarant pays me to tell them what the customer wants, and to take that food to the customer. The customer tips me to ensure that the restuarant gets their order right, provide them with any service they need, and to make sure their dining expirience is as enjoyable as possible.

I tip knowing what's it like to be on the other end. The lure of a lot of service jobs is "hey, though we're actually paying you less than minimum wage, you'll be making a lot more money because you're money will be in tips".

I work as a paint-store employee now (along with being a student) and though i don't expect to get tip'd as i'm well compensated from the company, i know that the contractors who regularly come to the store are likely to tip me, offer me free drinks, smokes, beer, etc, since they want to build a repore with me and create a relationship ensuring that they know someone who can take care of them when they'll need a big order made.

You didn't give him beer, you gave him Smirnoff Ice.

Speaking as someone who used to work installing things at people's houses (though I was putting in fences, not putting in a satellite dish), people that give out ice water/beer/other beverages get a much better install than usual.

A lot of tipping is stupid. Why the customers should be forced to pay the wages of people instead of the company doesn't sound very American to me at all. Tipping is a real sweet gig for the companies that hire these people. Pay them below min wage and let the customers pay the rest! Heh.

As for tipping being for performance enhanching pay...shouldn't the company be doing that as well?? Some sort of bonus scheme if they get positive feedback? The service from waiters over here in the US is no better than places that don't have tipping so I think that theory is bunk anyway

People always go on about how tipping is capitalist. I dunno, I see it as the other way around. I see it as companies getting away with paying their workers 3rd world wages and instead having the people pay them instead.

And I think it is good manners to offer people at least a drink if they are going to do some labor work around your house.

i have never understood this American fascination with equality and then this constant fretting over when and how much to tip... don't waiters in restaurants get wages? why should they live on your handouts???
that doesn't sound very american to me...

My mother is a waiter at a restraunt. She has regular wages (a little over $2 an hour), but her health insurance from the company (Darden Restraunts) costs more than she makes in hourly wages. She owes them money every paycheck. Yes, they do get hourly wages, but its practically nothing.

Ive got the VOOM installer coming over next week and I dont know if Im going to tip, (I see how well of a job he does), but definately offer him a beverage. (alot of installers actually dont like/take beer so offer a coke or water as well). Alot of installers will take cold water from you ;)

Why do you say "thank you" when someone brings your food? Or when the waiter pours you a drink? Or when anyone gives/does something to you? I sure as heck don't tell the mailman to fsk off when he sees me on the front porch and decides to deliver my mail into my hands. I say "thank you very much" and I smile, and sometimes my dad slips him a ten just so he doesn't have to worry about his lunch money that day.

IT IS OKAY TO SHOW MORE GRATITUDE. Stop being a grinch :|

I like the concept of tipping. Wouldnt you like to be able to pay that retail clerk jack-crap for the wasting your time, talking on the phone to his friend instead of ringing your order up? Tipping lets you do that to a waiter. OTOH, you can reward good service. Without tipping at restaurants, you'd get the same level of service you do from retail clearks that arent on commission.

Besides, either you can tip, or you can pay the same amount of cash that you would anyway (the employer isnt just going to eat the loss due to having to pay at least $3/hr more per waiter to bring them up to minimum wage) AND not have any way to give immediate and guaranteed feedback without having to waste your time talking to the manager.

yeah but i rate Smirnoff Ice higher than beer...even though he left 1/3 bottle unfinished while he guzzled the 20oz cola. He also took a pack of ChipsAhoy with him since i didn't find the wrapper anywhere.
