You don't have to tip anyone, ever.

exactly... does he not get paid for whatever he does?

i have never understood this American fascination with equality and then this constant fretting over when and how much to tip... don't waiters in restaurants get wages? why should they live on your handouts???
that doesn't sound very american to me...

waiters make less than minimum wage for a reason.

Maybe because sometimes people feel nice, and the person receiving the tip did a job that satisfied the customer?

Sometimes it seems I am not giving a tip as much as a bribe saying please don't screw up if you can help it, and if you did please find some BS reason to go back and fix it once you feel guilty for screwing me after I gave you a beer.

In a performance-based job, like a waiter or waitress, I can understand where tipping is involved. It forces them to at least have some kind of standard of quality much like comisssion does.

What I don't understand is how people feel like they have to tip EVERYONE, but yet only certain jobs are deemed tipworthy. I can also understand offering the guy who installed your cable a bottle of water or something because he's working out in the hot sun. Making him a sandwich and all is just silly in my opinion. The guy is in your house to do a job he's already getting paid for, so why do you feel the need to provide him lunch as well?

Who else do you make lunch for? Can I come over and have a sandwich as well?

I always tip, just about everyone.

any reason.. other than that it makes you feel good about yourself...?

isn't that good enough?

You have to show off how much money you have to feel good about yourself?

By tipping someone doesn't make someone a show off. People show appreciation in different ways. Some are generous and tip often and others aren't.

If a person tips another person for whatever reason, it's their business. What I do with my money is my business and I won't tell you how to spend yours either.

Any tip I give is party due to service received and appreciation. The better the performance, the bigger the tip.

I generally tip the standard 10-20% and sometimes leave more if the service was exceptional.

As for your situation, a cold glass of water would be good enough.

anyone doing work on your house should be offered at the very least a glass of ice water. A beer would probably be much more satisfying to most of them however

Um, I'm not rich, not even close.

But I appreciated the gesture when I was in their place. So its not always about the money.

I tip 3 people commonly... car wash, people who cut my hair and don't annihilate it, and waiters.

Oh I forgot one... pizza delivery.

Haha, this made me laugh, along with the image of a satellite dish installer drinking a Smirnoff Ice.

Can you get a pic of your installer holding the empty bottle while taking a swig from a Mike's Hard? ;)

You have a point. People get paid for their jobs so why should we give them more?

I don't think it's so much an issue of equality though. It's more of a custom and courtesy than anything. Also there are jobs that are based on getting tips so the wages are very low. Waiters, strippers...etc...

(on a side note, in a strip club a friend worked for, strippers actually pay the club to let them work there. Then they get tons of tips. They make a butload of money.)

It seems like in Europe (I've heard this from friends who went there, but I don't know for a fact) waiters get paid more and do not take tips.

You never really have to tip, but you will offend some people if you don't.

We tipped our satellite guy, but our house was a very difficult job. We have a roof that slopes at a very steep angle, and it is also very high. He had to rent a taller ladder to even install the dish. If he had fallen he would have been dead, not injured. Also, our house was not wired for cable so he had to do all of the cabling himself.

It just didn't seem right to get "free" installation in this case, so we gave him a nice tip. He could have done 3-4 other jobs in the time it took him to do ours, but he stuck with it anyway.

and the reason is ..... consumers who can't figure out that cheap food + 20% is no longer so cheap...?

meaning satisfying the customer is not to be expected, but to be seen as a pleasant surprise...???

update:..

well, it was almost a 4hr job for 3 rooms so i feel he deserved the beer. Since he had to work through lunch, we felt some food was a decent gesture. Made him some philly cheeseteak, chips, grapes, and a large coke. :)

He finished ALL of it so it felt pretty good.
