Yeah, and BMW maintenance is really "free" for those first few years.....

Well, coming from a 5 year old machine it didn't cost me shit to upgrade to the latest OS. Can't say that for windows.

thats why said right-ish

fair enough, but not the same thing at all IMO. You can't compare setting up an OSX comp vs setting up a Linux comp...

I've looked into Linux enough to know that I'm too lazy to figure that shit out and don't care enough to figure that shit out.

Someone has to pony up all that money they shove down the FCC's pants.

As for the raised rates of the cable boxes, it is of course just another vehicle that they can use to add fees.
- Like the "document fees" when you buy a car, allegedly to cover the burdensome costs of the documentation they need to do. You know, because their other costs of doing business are free: Carpet cleaning, sewage service, electrical power, building expenses, trash pickup, and so on.

- The "fuel surcharge" that's added to the base price for UPS or FedEx, because before diesel fuel was $4/gallon, it was free.

- On a recent quote for some power transformers here at work, there is a "materials surcharge." Same thing: Before copper's recent price increases, it was free.

It's all just pricing games that are intended to mislead in an attempt to more money out of people.

Sports

Main reason why I have cable.
And they know it. They know they have an audience that would likely pay a lot more than they're paying now, a self-captive audience. So there's a scary question to ask: How much would sports fans pay? How high will they go before they start to lose too much of their audience?

Get rid of cable. Watch live sports on the internet(for free) until they offer reasonably priced stand alone channels.

I'd cancel it. I pay TWC $45 a month for 30Mbit down and get everything over the internet somehow.

Yeah, we should all know the drill by now. When the cable company tries jacking up your rates like that, call them up and tell them that you're canceling your account and switching to a satellite dish. They'll usually cave and give you a lower promo rate.

Last attempt only saved me $7 a month, but this is the first thing I'm going to do tomorrow. Works wonders with gas/electric for anyone that hasn't tried this. Thanks for the reminder.

try this, cut the cable and go get some air... you sound angry.

try a snickers.

You probably did not mean this as constructive, and if so you stumbled upon good advice. One of the first things I told myself after posting.

-----

Cable companies should not be able to list prices before hardware and taxes, especially when the real totals are 150%+ the advertised values. They should also not be allowed to charge exorbitant fees on hardware that many times over pays for those devices.

Though they tried their best to keep my bill low, due to evil networks demanding more money for their channels, Time Warner was forced to raise my 20mpbs internet connection price from $40 to $50. The modem also went from $4 a month to $6 a month, for reasons. The added money will also help with paving the way for new infrastructure they aren't interested in laying down. The good news is Time Warner is still the best value in internet around. Perhaps because they're the only one around, but a win is a win.

Threaten to cancel, you'll be sent to retention, try to talk them cutting like 10% off the price. If they don't want to bring it down, then actually do cancel.

Tell all your friends to do the same. This whole price hike will backfire for them. :D

You can get 1-2 channels using an antenna so at least you still have something to watch, even if it's just news. Sometimes you just want to sit down and watch anything such as when you're eating supper or something, so use the antenna for that. For everything else, download it or get it through other sources.

On similar subject, I hate it how bandwidth is still charged per usage. A 10g link is a 10g link, whether the ISP is using 10% capacity or 100% capacity does not cost the bandwidth provider more. Bandwidth should be flat rate based on capacity not on usage. ISPs have caps and stuff because it actually does cost them money if you use too much, but that cost is 100% artificial. It's not like it's an actual resource that people have to mine. The equipment is humming along whether it's being used or not.

I've looked into Linux enough to know that I'm too lazy to figure that shit out and don't care enough to figure that shit out.

I can see how putting in a disc, booting, clicking install, and entering your name might be too much for you to cope with.

You need to make sacrifices, drop cable tv, there isn't anything worth watching, 500 channels of junk.

*Consider building an htpc or getting a roku.
*Subscribe to services like Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, and Nexflix.
*Get yourself a good set of digital rabbit ears to get all your local stations
*Youtube has tons of good informative and entertaining videos.
*Dish service.

Main reason why I have cable.

sports is why the cable packages cost so much. Will never have cable again until they split the sports packages out, and even then I probably won't get it.. I'm too used to being ad free and will never succumb to video ads, popup ads, or any ads ever again. I won't use a cell phone data plan until I can lock all ads out and have decent data caps.

The more these content providers, google, and the like, try to lock things down to push ads in everyone's face, the more I'll resist and keep them blocked. I'm not going to buy what they're popping up in my face, so they aren't gaining anything through my participation in this insane system anyways.

For what it's worth, time warner cable was bought out by comcast, with comcast selling parts of it to charter, so time warner cable is not really controlled by time warner cable anymore.

Time Warner also recently announced that they were going to charge cable modem rental fees tocearthlink users. Not allowed to increase the rate for EarthLink, apparently. When I found out about this, I bought my own cable modem the next day. Why would I willingly start paying a rental fee for a modem that had been sitting in my apartment for 15 months and wasn't new when they gave it to me?

Cancelled cable TV awhile back because it was just too damn expensive & I hardly watched it. Occasionally I miss the sports but not much else.
Same. Hulu is $8/mo and has more shows than I care to watch.
Everything else is free OTA HD. (NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, PBS)

You can't win against cable.
