Get the form letter that TWC is raising rates again, and it is because 'of the increasing cost to bring you the channels you want'.

So what gets raised? Everything, including get this - cable boxes and other hardware are going from $10 a month to $11 and change. Can anyone tell me how content provider rate increases makes my cable box and remotes cost more? So ESPN charges TWC more each month, and the price of my cable box goes up? This is with increases across the board for the services btw.

I figure, so far, that each cable box has cost me $400+ so far, and each remote $280. It is downright theft imo.

Anyone know of any providers, maybe Dish, that doesn't gouge the hell out of you for hardware, or any providers where you can still buy your own boxes/remotes/cable modems?

My $99 a month plan which comes out to $166 on the latest bill, will now be almost $200 a month after all the added on bullshit.

Because they're a monopoly and can charge whatever the hell they want.

Cancelled cable TV awhile back because it was just too damn expensive & I hardly watched it. Occasionally I miss the sports but not much else.

Buy a cable card like HDHomerun Prime and ditch the cable boxes. Or even better idea, ditch cable TV and paid TV completely.

DTV will make you pay a ~$15/month "advanced receiver fee" even if you buy the $300 TIVO.

Buy a cable card like HDHomerun Prime

no dvr = what's the point

500 Channels of commercials, all on at the same time so you can't even surf and watch 2 programs at once. Cancelled mine, only internet and rabbit ears for me.

Yeah, we should all know the drill by now. When the cable company tries jacking up your rates like that, call them up and tell them that you're canceling your account and switching to a satellite dish. They'll usually cave and give you a lower promo rate.

? You can have way better dvr unit. There's no better dvr than your computer and TBs of storage.

Sure if you have a PC spec'ed for this already. if not you might as well just rent the cable box.

you could completely build a BADASS HTPC, for like 300 bucks..

I7 barebones kit+ram+storage

and you have something capable of ANYTHING out there.. MUCH MORE powerful than any HTPC/streaming box

nix is free...and the best... for this application.

not legally (ie with a licensed operating system)

suggestions of linux or other similar nonsense will be ignored.

1) You and I have very different definitions of "bad ass"
2) lol @ nix.

After dumping the hours necessary to learn everything and set everything up (nobody except you fucking hardcore geeks knows how to set up *nix), you're still out several hundred dollars + time + you need to actually "source" the material you plan on playing.

...or you can just shell out the 10 bucks a month and rent a cable box.

My $250 dell desktop I bought like 3 years ago could easily serve as dvr. I already use it as a media server. Windows Media Center is free with Windows 7.

Is there no such thing as a TV tuner for mac? I use an antenna and "cheap" i5 Dell I bought 2 years ago. Works great as an HTPC.
