I would be for banning certain weapons. As mentioned before in this thread, I also do not see the need for most assault/semi-automatic rifles for anything other than defense from a foreign invasion. Even semi-automatics can be illegaly modded to become fully automatic.

Pistols and Shotguns would be still be okay for home security I think. Though when I think about the comment on SWAT and the MP5 is a bit drastic considering they are law enforcement officials and using them in the line of duty when most of us arent'.

I am a Marine and was stationed in Okinawa for 3 years. They don't have pistols and rifles out there, not even the Japanese Police. They carry batons and are trained in self defense and some form of martial arts. It was a very safe place and I never felt a threat to my life like I would driving through certain parts of LA. Though I'm not advocating our military and Police should be without firearms.

This from a guy with fascist in his name, so ironic.
Criminals aren't going to spend $1,000+ on a rifle, they are going to go buy a .38 special or 9mm from the black market to do their crimes with.
Unless robbing a bank in LA.
Shotguns are too long, the shortened variety are illegal.
You can legally buy them with 18" barrels, which makes them quite compact.

I have a shotgun and a 30-30 for hunting and a 357 revolver for home security. Why would you need anything more than that?

Let's get this straight. Not all Assault rifles are Automatic rifles. Most are Semi-Automatic, just like a million other hunting/sport rifles.

Automatic rifles were banned by the National Firearms Act of 1934.

This is not about what you need or what you think other people need.

Fixed it for you.
Modifying a semi to full automatic is a relatively simple procedure.
Why do you think they call them ASSAULT rifles?
That being said ...... explain to me why you would need an assault rifle.

Dont be silly, almost every single thug criminal will carry some cheapo pistol, not an assault rifle. Bringing up a couple (in this case one) anectdotal case of criminals with assault rifles doesnt really sway the argument in your favor.

I have an idea. Why don't we keep criminals in prison since repeat criminals are the ones that do most of the crime? and that includes gun crime. Then you won't have to worry about guns anymore.

This argument is kind of lame. Explain to me why you NEED 90% of the things in your home, odds are you can survive without them.

Some people want them because they are *gasp* fun *gasp* Same with fast cars, loud stereos, etc etc

I guess if you consider purchasing a full-auto trigger assembly off the black market a simple procedure, you're correct.

The "Assault" weapons we are talking about are semi-auto. The previous Assault weapons ban did not mention fully automatic weapons at all.

They are called assault rifles because that is what scares you and gets you panties in a bunch.

Again, it is not about what you need or what you think other people need. Need has nothing to do with it.

People also don't "need" the freedom of speech... as witness by many countries the don't have it. That doesn't mean we should get rid of it.

Lots of gun-grabbers in here. It just goes to show that people are willing to erode rights when they dont "see why you need them." Scary.

Yea, stock up now, so when they ban them later and you have to turn them over for free or face a felony, and you will lose the cash you spent to buy them. Great idea, man.

Hope you got a nice deep hole dug in your backyard to hide them all in if you bought them with no background checks at a gun show, too.

What's the point of having an assault rifle if you can't use it and have to hide it to own it or go to jail?

I dunno why you'd want any thing but a shot gun... I was in the army and I could care less about AR-15's etc...etc... Shot guns rule for home security any day. But, what's your point in buying them now and turning them over later unless you plan on breaking the laws?

What is your real motive?

Because theyre fun to shoot :) Thats like saying why would you want a car other than a Yugo? I mean...it just gets you from point A to point B right?

:D

The next two years will definitely be "interesting."

Kinda trollish but I'll bite....I bought a fully auto AR15 and a MAC10 a week after the ban dropped. Also bought 20 round clips for my pistols.

But its kinda trollish.

woldn't that be an m16? what did you pay? what pistols that hold 20rnds?

M15 is usually referred to the semi-auto version of the m16. Otherwise youre right same gun

Most guns will hold a 20 round clip, especially Glock and ParaOrd Hawg which is what I have. It simply extends the handle.

Military "tough guy" image?

If you want defense, a handgun or shotgun is way better.

If you want sport, a deer rifle is way more accurate.

Winner!

no, it isn't. semi-auto m16 is an ar15. m15 is a completely different rifle.

Yup - and minimum 26-inch length overall.

I've got a Mossberg 12-gauge pump with the factory short barrel and pistol grip. I've removed the 'plug' (which as long as I'm on my property I'm legal - off-property it's considered a WMD)

Why do people buy/sell cars that go faster then 50 mph? Higher speeds statistically lead to higher casualties driving and are not necessary.

Fist off an assult rifle is a fully automatic or a three round burst weapon...........most of what the media calls assult rifles are merely semi-automatic copies of the automatic cousins...................

To own a fully automatic weapon you have to do a FBI backround check submit your fingerpints and buy your tax stamp ........this stamp or form will be retained with the weapon you buy..............

being a Vietnam Vet I fully support any person that wants to own a semi-automatic weapon.

Not to mention they banned the further manufacture of new fully-automatic weapons (as well as conversions from semi-auto to fully-auto) in 1986. So the number of legal fully automatic weapons is limited and is not getting any larger. Because of this, prices are enormous. In addition to paying tons of money for the tax stamp and waiting several months to get approval, a fully-automatic weapon could cost you $10,000 (whereas a semi-auto version of the same weapon might be only $1,000).

I really hope the Democrats don't go after this. Leave gun laws as they are. States like California that are paranoid of guns can pass their own laws if they want, and citizens will be free to move to a state that has loose gun laws, like Vermont. The losers in California who passed their state's assault weapons ban would probably like to be rid of those dangerous, unstable gun owners anyway. Because, you know, Vermont has so much more crime than California

I don't understand why some of you people care whether a law-abiding, abled and licensed citizen has an assault rifle or any other type if gun. What are you terrified of?

Great idea. We only house about 2.5 million in prison now, and have a population of about 235 million. We have more people in prison than most countries on Earth have in prison COMBINED, including China with over a billion people and only about 200k in prison. And we call ourselves a free nation. Oh, the irony.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15

The name AR-15 is now used almost exclusively to refer to the semi-automatic (commercially available) civilian version(s) of the M16 and M4 assault rifles.

The AR15 rifle is available in a wide range of configurations from a number of manufacturers. These configurations range from short carbine-length models with features such as adjustable length stocks and optical sights, to heavy barrel models.

Aftermarket upper receivers that incorporate barrels of different weights and lengths, and handle different caliber ammunition, abound for this rifle. They are very easily installed, due to the rifle's modular design. These calibers include (in caliber size order):

Pistol calibers:

7.62x25mm
9mm luger
10mm
40 S&W
45 ACP
5.7x28mm
.50 AE
Rifle calibers:

.17 Remington
.17 Remington Fireball
.22 Long Rifle
.20 Tactical
.204 Ruger
.221 Remington Fireball
.222 Remington
.222 Remington Magnum
5.45x39mm
5.56x45mm NATO
.223 Remington
.223 WSSM
6mm PPC
6mm-223 Remington
.243 WSSM
6.5 Grendel (.264 cal)
6.8 SPC (.270 cal)
.300 Whisper
7.62x39mm
.450 Bushmaster
.458 SOCOM
.50 Beowulf
