Time for Democrats to ditch gun control.

Reasons:
1. It's a political loser with working class and rural whites who would benefit from Democrat policies but won't vote for them due to this one issue. Winning them could cement Democrats as the governing party for a generation. GOP would be left selling trickle down and anti-abortion, both of which are political losers.
2. It's not going to be implementable. There are just too many guns out there and too many people who'll hold on to theirs regardless of what the government says. It will be like Prohibition 2.0, the law abiding people might follow it, but the crazies and the criminals won't.
3. It's not going to pass*, and even if it does, it will be struck down by the Supreme Court, and even if it's upheld.
4. *The only way it might remotely pass is if liberals start arming themselves, see Reagan backing the Mulford Act after Black Panthers started open carrying in California. So even if you support gun control, the way to get it is to get liberals armed first.
5. We looked fascist tyranny in the eye. Those armed goons coming to our cities ready to cause trouble were a warning sign that we cannot continue to unilaterally disarm and need to take the 2nd Amendment's actual intent seriously. They aren't going away, and who knows what personality cult they get behind next. We should not be taking these chances by unilaterally disarming.

What do the Republicans have to give up?

Gun safety is favored by over 80% of people.

Most Republican policy positions don't get a majority approval yet they give up nothing??

We wouldn't be giving up anything real, since we never got gun control done to begin with. GOP would be giving up real power if we take this issue away from them.
If liberals in urban centers of power start arming themselves, GOP will become very interested in gun control in a hurry. That's the only way it will pass. If you want peace, get ready for war.

I think the dems should still push for universal background checks but not anything else. But down the road. Forget about it during Biden's first two years at all. Only on the slim chance you keep the house and gain the Senate in 2022. Unlikely.

Agree with OP on all counts. Unfortunately though, gun control is a hot button issue with many Democratic women.

With a Republican SCOTUS threatening Roe, it's not likely to be a deciding issue for them. But for a lot of voters on the other side of the issue, it is.

I hear you and agree on some level. However it won't stop Republicans lying about their position and the minions believing it. After all they've been sold a bill of goods Democrats are socialist.

If it's official party position, that gives cover to candidates in small states to run on gun rights and take this issue away from the GOP.
GOP has structural advantages in Senate due to small rural states. We can't win them without untangling ourselves from gun control.

On this note, I'd like to bring up that the most likely reason that the GOP is ready to throw Trump under the bus today is because doing so greatly increases their chances of keeping the Senate and flipping the House in 2022.

I think in terms of gun control, it's best not to talk about it and just do it. Stop campaigning on it and just quietly pass legislation.

I don't think not running on gun control would stop Republicans from lying about them running on gun control.

People aren't paying attention to the policy differences between candidates. They're paying attention to the candidates.

Mary Kelly just won a very lopsided victory over an incumbent GOP in Arizona (pretty red state). His signature issue IS gun control. His wife is Gabby Giffords, who nearly died because of a nutjob with a gun shooting up one of her town halls.

Most Americans, and very nearly all the rest of the thinking world, have concluded the USA is stupidly awash with guns with next to no reasonable gun control. If only the GOP focused on voter control like they do gun control we might even have free and fair elections here.

Just extend background checks to all sales, and let it be done.

It is a wedge issue that does more damage than good. Work on background checks and shift focus to what actually causes people to kill each other. It's also worth noting that more people kill themselves with guns then are killed by others. I don't think suicide prevention get nearly enough attention.

Nobody cares about suicides with guns. People care about suicides but don't care about whether its with guns or without guns.

If there were zero other gun deaths besides suicides, I doubt there'd be a gun control movement.

We hear this nonsense every year. When Gumbah is out of the White House. These people ---> White Domestic Terrorists, School shooters. White males and the Thugs that are killing our brothers and sisters will be wrecking the country under the Biden administration. Mark my words. They are not going to let him rest. They are going to test him. That they will. Then the Trump supporters will blame us Democrats left and right so they can claim more House seats. But, The country will still have an arsenal of 425 million weapons and 18 million AR-15'S. Figure that one out. That is the GOP playbook for the next four years!
