a local small shop carries it here in Columbus, Ohio. But while they don't have a insane selection, they do notably try to stock the more famous craft brews and imports.
This. But he can probably only get it if he's on the west coast.
Shiner Bock if ya can find it.
It's mainly in Texas but it's starting to spread farther out. I have seen it here in KC.
If you can, get Ten-Fidy. It makes guiness look mlike it has a nice tan.

Sammy Smith Oatmeal Stout is fairly common at many of the grocery stores around the midwest. It's usually in a 4 pack though, not a 6 pack. It's a very good, dark, rich stout. A little more mellow & sweeter and less bitter than Guinness Extra Stout.

Ten Fiddy is an amazing beer. I love Oskar Blues. Designed to be consumed out of a can.
Stone Imperial Stout is great as well.
Look for Russian or Imperial Stouts.
You also may consider strong ales, like North Coast Old Stock, it's 13% ABV and great.
Samuel Adams Double Bock
Another props for Old Rasputin - I've purchased it in TX, so perhaps it's on the east coast.
